This necessitated sea between Port Arthur and Vladivostock, and for that reason she had of late directed some attention to South Korea. The fact that Russia had recently, sent a special commission to Katoku Island and surveyed both the island itself and its approaches was a matter which. should engage the serious attention, of the Japanese authorities.

Sensational gold finds in North-west Aus- There, at Marble Bar, on the 31st January, two brothers found a alug of gold weighing 25lbs. avoirdupois, and about 200 ounces of smaller slugs. At Salgash, close by, extraordinary crush- ings have been recorted-in fact they are almost fabulous. One lot of four tons gav 400 oz, another of zo tons about 800 oz.; whilst a further parcel of 60 tons returned between 6 or and 7 oz. to the ton. Scarcity of labour and want of capital stand in the way of mining development in that quarter. The same difficulties attend the opening up of the diamond fields at Nullagine in the same district. The ground resembles that of the Khubertey diamond-fields, and diamonds have been found plentifully. Until, however, a thorough system of prospecting has been persisted in, to form any idea of the payable nuure of the deposits would be impossible.

It will be remembered that some years ago, he suddenly abandoned his position and went to sea, under the naine of "John Orth," as the master of a merchantman. The vessel was reported lest, and nothing further was heard of the Imperial seaman. His death, however, has never been proved, and it is quite possible that this story of his living after the fashion of Crusoe may be ture. Such a life would entirely accord with his humour...
