·SANITARY BOARD.

This afternoon a meeting of the Hongkong Sanitary Board was held. The President (Dr. Atkinson, Principal Civil Medical, Oficer) occupied the chair, and there were also present the Hon. R. D. Ormsby (Director of Public Works), Mr. E. Osborne, and Dr. Clark (Medical Officer of Health and Acting Secretary)..

THE foreign manufacturer, says the Westmiu- ster Gazelle, is about to invade a department, that has up to now been exclusively a depart ment for the honte producer. The Midland directors have just ordered no fewer than twenty locomotives from American firms, most of them from the well-known Baldwin works at Phila delphia. The reasons given for this startling new departure are that the American engines are better for work on perceptible gradients and sharp curves, and that in any case our

A NEW scheme for making a cycling-club popular has been started in Grimsby. The subscription is to be fourpence a week, and to cover all meats consumed on club runs, and all repairs to cycles on the way. The name of the club is the Euclid C.C., so-called, presumably, in allusion to the ancient grometrician's happy habit of adding the comment " which is absurd," to an unworkable proposition. The scheme might be managed if there is a very large membership roll, all of whom pay regularly, most of whom stay away from club runs, and those who do come only ride first-class machines, but not otherwise.
