PROPOSED NEW ANGLO-CHINESE BANK

For a week past, says the 57. James Gazette of December 21st, various rumours have been in circulation in banking circles that another' Jarge Anglo Chinese bank was in course of formation, and it was not until this morning that the news leaked out that there was some. substratum of truth in the matter. We learn from an undoubted source that a Manchester gentleman who is endowed with some Chinese Banking experience, has been in negotiation with several London financiers, to found another bank, and to absorb two institutions -which are now doing a rather poor business in China and have had several heavy losses,

efforts The names of these banks we omit for obvious reasons, So far, the

The negotiations may, however, eventually end in the two Chinese banks above referred to being analgamated. It is very' much to be doubted if the need, exists for another bank at this juncture, for it must be recalled that, within the, past three or four years some four or five new banks have opened business in China, but have not, so far, done any business of commequence. It is only the old-established arms in that part of the Eastern Hemisphere that are flourishing to any degree. The newer institutions of only a few years standing have scarcely had time to develop themselves. It is very remarkable to record that at the present moment there are more banking institutions in China than in India; while trade in the latter country is three or four times greater than in China. In China there are ten banks; in India there are six. In Shanghai to-day there are four English banks, of which only two are doing very good business, The premier institution is, of course, the Hong- kong and Shanghai Bank, which is known the vide
