INSPECTION OF THE ROYAL ENGINEERS.
Major-General Gascoigne held his annual inspection of the Royal Engineers, this mor ning, on the Queen's Road Parade Ground. It may interest renders to know that the dif- ferent branchesof the old "Sappers and Miners" were amalgamated after the Crimean war, changing their name to the Royal Engineers, since "which time, as any new scientific im provement is adopted in the British Isles, different companies of the Corps are or ganized to' At it for general service. There aro at presens 41 numbered companies but new ones are being formed every year; besides these companies there are some which are known only by the names of places where they are permanently stationed, such as the Hongkong Submarina Miners. Again there Are the instructional "lettered" companies for untrained men under Instruction at Chatham, Aldershot, Plymouth and Portsmouth, the Corps full strength amounting to very nearly 8,000 men, distributed in all parts of the world wherever the British flag flies. The Duke of Cambridge was, and we beleive now is, Honorary Colonel of the Corps. It is a well known fact that he was always very justly proud of the position, in fact, it is related that he once said, when they were marching past brick wall, "There go my men, as steady as a and every one of them a tradesman. This morning they fully kept up their old reputationby the smart and clean mannarin which they turned out for the inspection. The submarine Miners here are divided into two distinct portions, vis the European and Native. The Natives were detached from the main body this morning, and the 25th Co. and Britishers of the Hong: kong Co were put through their battalion drill by the junior officers, after which they were formed up and highly complimented both for their smartness in appearance and their drill, the General expressing surprise considering thatthey wero principally employed at work and not on drill. He also spoke highly of their moral and physical records. The native portion were then put through the manual exercises by Lt Bagnal Wilde, R. E, and the sword bayonet exercise by Lt. Rendall, R. E. The latter officer afterwards put them through a few simple company movements. On being formed up, the General had Havildar-Major Ching Fat up, and on being assured that he understood English, told the havildar to tell the others how surprised and pleased he was to see the way in which the natives had drilled; he also gave great praise to the British Non-commissioned officers for the way in which they had instruct. ed the natives.
The General inspected the buildings, books and barrack-rooms expressing himself well pleased with all he saw.

B) There was a moderate east wind at the start and the line was crossed by the boats fairly well together, Maid Afarian, Phat, and Erica being in the van. In the run to Stonecutters Dart showed remarkable qualities, running through the fleet into a good second place to Erica, Behind Stonecutters the wind was very light and patchy, and the boats changed places very freely, but Erica kept the lead and caught the strong wind off the West point of the Island first; then came Maid Marian and Lady bird. After passing Green Island the wind died away and the boats drifted with the tide for over an hour, when a light east wind carried them down to the rock off Cowechow, when the order was Erica, Phabe, Maid Marian in the first half minute, then Ladybird, Bonito and Princess, with Dart some time after. After rounding the mark the wind increased and Erica and Phabe, which had both kept well to windward, got the benefit of it first and went away from the faid; Bonito also went into fourth place. A lucky slant of wind off the lee side of Stone- cutters pat Phade into first place, but she was passed again by Erica under the Yaumatce shore, and the line was crossed in the following order
