A BRITISH JOURNALIST ON THE INTERNATIONAL SITUATION.

What a year this has been for diplomacy and journalism, what.with wars and rumours of war! One excitement has followed another in rapid succession and we have had no rest. Lord Roberts, who, was presented with the freedom of Cardiff four years ago, writes as follows, in reply to a letter from the Cardiff Western Mail"From 'a' military point of view the battle of Omdurman was in my opinion In most valuable and important fear of arins, while the results to the nation, politically and commercially can hardly be over-estimated. It was a proof that the Sirdar possesses all the qualities which are necessary for a general commanding an army in the field-clear judg ment, sound common sense, tenacity of purpose, quickness of perception, promptitude of decision, and, above all, an infinite capacity for taking pains, while his talent for organization has shone most conspicuously.. It is owing to Lord Kitchener that the Egyptian army has been turned into such a splendid - fighting machine, and it is to the system of organization which he perfected in a masterly manner that the several details of the campaign in the Soudan were carried out without a hitch in the face of considerable difficulties, and be was enabled to concentrate his force on the plains of Omdurman almost to the hour at which he had predicted : long before that Gordon should at last be avenged.

In Europe there are many things not quite eleared up. Whilst the third policeman was in the get of firing he was badly slashed.on one atm, but pluckily stuck to his title and wounded one of the robbers 'who bolted. The policeman, with one arm disabled and his head badly cut, behaved most pluckly, loading and firing his rifle several times, and so man aged to hit one or two of the robbers, who after a little while cleared off without having obtained the coveted treasure. Two of the robbers are in custody-one, the man who wat first wounded, was stopped on the road and gave out that he had been attacked by robberss!

The Acting Attorney General, instructed by the Crown Soliton, appeared for the prosecu tion; the defendants were undefended.
In stating the case for the prosecuting the Acting Attorney General said, that on the 17th of December last, the defendents entered Inspector Cotton's office, and asked him whether they might kill a sheep. The inspector himself would state the exact words used by the defendants; these words meant in English "Will you allow me to kill a sheep?" The Inspector said "Where is the sheep?" and they both replied that it was in the yard. The Inspector then said, "Bring it up and I will inspect it." The defendants went away and returned with the sheep in question The Inspector examined the sheep and told the first | AN UNDERGROUND LAKE NEAR the Madhi in reply to the demand for his defendant that he could not allow the sheep to ACCORDING to a depatch received from Welbe killed, the reason being that he saw the sheep n delicate health, and who ought not to havelington, N. The Saturday Review of last week professes to have heardon authority which it is really- impossible to doubt," the well-nigh incredible fact, that the actual letter written by Gordon ta eurrender was picked up by a private soldier in a street of Omdurman. The letter, which is stated to be now in the hands of the Queen, has been examined by experts, and pronounced to be undoubtedly in Gordon's handwriting.. The proposal for his surrender is scouted, the Madhi is reproached with his misdeeds, and his destruction by English soldiers is pro phesied. The incident of the recovery of the letter seems.to us easily explicable if we sup pose it to have been stored in the archives of Omdurman, and thrown away as worthless by some of the plunderers of the public treasury after the baule,
