NEW CANADIAN STEAMSHIP SERVICE.

A considerable number of persons travelled from Paddington, on Wednesday to Milford Haven, on the inviting of the chaimmat of the Canadian Steamship Company and of the chairman of the Milfont Docks Company. The special object of the expedition was to participate in the inauguration of a new line of steamers to Canada bound for a new port by a new route. For the new line and route many advantages are claimed. It is urged that the port of arrival in Canada, which is named Paspebiuc and lies at the end of the Colonial Railway on the north side of the Bay of Chaleurs, is free from ice all the year round, that the route is substan. tially shorter than any other between this country and Canada, and that { is a great trade to be developed. The Gaspesin, the first vessel, to make the trip, started for Canada yesterday morning under happy aus pices, for she has a good gargo and a large of passengers, including to be preliminary difficulties to be encountered by those who desire to make Mil- ford a port of arrival and departure for ocean going liners have been overcome. The dis- tance from Paddington to Milford is 247 miles, and it was accomplished on Wednesday in five hours and a half. Some of the navelling was very fast indeed, being at the rate of quite 62 miles to the hour."

SHASI AFFAIRS,

A dispatch from Shasi reports a very gloomy outlook for trade in that new port. Owing, it is import business fram that province has of late stated, to the rebellion in Szechuan the large been entirely stopped, while the import trade from other portions of Western Hupeh province of which Shasi has always been the distributing recent petty insurrections and the fear of mare centre has also all bui ceased, through the anti-foreign riots. In consequence all the many exporting hongs and banks-several of very old standing have had to close their doors. To make matters worse the wealthy gentry and notables in Shasi and the neighbouring city of Chinchou have recently been calling in their deposits in the banks and pawnshops owing a the insecurity of the times, thereby making. ready money atile scarter-almost to vanishing point.

A lecture on The Story of Canada" was given at the London Institution recently by Mr. toward Angus Kennedy. Beginning with the French discovery of the St. Lawrence in Tus 0. & O. S. S. Co.'s steamer Gaelic with plain in 1608, the lecturer described the Indian in Honolulu, has arrived at Yokohama, and 1534 and the foundation of Quebec by Cham-mails, etc., from San Francisco to the 24th ulin, terror which hung over the early, days of the will leave for this port wie Inland Sea, Kobe, colony; the self-sacrifice of the missionaries Nagasaki and Shanghai, to-morrow morning. and such secular heroes as Adam Dollard; the

If the French had been content with Canada they might perhaps have kept it till now, but they tried to seize the whole interior of the continent, and to keep out the westward flow of British population by a line of military posts. After describing the creation of Ontario by the inflowing thousands, of United Empire and of emigrants from the mother land, the lecturer told in brief the history of the North West and British Columbia, and concluded by suggesting that British manufacturers should display some energy in taking advantage of the preferential tariff established in Canada this year. It was of no use to have an open door if they would not go in. At present Canada took quantities of goods from other countries which we could supply, even without a reduced tariff, if our manufacturers were more anxious to please their customers.

Owing to the rebellion spreading in Sze chuen, the Provincial Treasurer Wang Chih- chun has requested Viceroy Chang Chibung Loyalis:s from the newly formed United States, S. Sandpiper...

So far they have not threatened to mid in the treaty port itself, but several outrages have occurred in the vici nity the Chinese city of Newchwang, which is of twenty-seven miles to the north of the port, here is, therefore, quite a panic amongst native merchants in the latter place, most of whom have ranch hungs in the former.

GRAIN SMUGGLING.

It is stated by the Universal Gasrtle that the-Chinaman who was handed over to the Soochow authorities from. Shanghai for having attempted to unlawfully ship 10,000 piculs o rice abroad has been tried several times by the Judicial department and from his depositions seventeen ether persons are implicated in the matter. Two of them, employés in-a-Chinese- ten hong, have been, arrested, and the rest are being enquired for by the runners.

The course of conduct on the part of the French that led to the conquest of the Canadas by Great Britain is the same course of conduct that the French are now pursuing in Indo- China.

Not content with Cochin China, Annams and Tonquin they are attempting to seize the whole interior of the peninsula and to Jan, extend themselves from sea to sex. They seek further to stretch out into the heart of China to, the north. This result, inay be as before, that they may lose all that they now possess to Great Britain.
