HONGKONG CRICKET CLUB.

The annual general meeting in conneciton with the Hongkong Cricket Club was held in the Pavillon yesterday afternoon ta recalvetha jep ri and elect office-bearies' for the ensuing year. Mr. A. G. Wise (president) ocoupled the chair, and he was supported by De, Lowson (hon, sec- retary), Messrs. A. Donald (hon, treasurer), Hon. T. Sercombe Smith, G. D Campbell, and P. A. Cex (commlitre)."

THE REPORT AND ACCOUNTS.

The report and accounts ware submitted. The report sald :-" The accounts which are stiached abow a balance of $3873.31 to the credit of the club on the 13th August, 1898. The list of members, together with the averages for the season, is ardexed. Lleat. G D. Campbell, | H.K.R., beads the battling average with 419, whilst Rev. G. Valllogs in taking 31 wickets at 15.2 1901 each beats the bowling average. Eight scores of over 100 were made, vis :—Lleut, | G. D. Campbell, 100 not cut, 112 cot out; Capt. Drian, teg; T. N. Howard, roz not out ; Capt. Langhorne, 111; Dr. J. A. Lawsan, 163; M. D. Wond, tot not out and 170. Theyarquet courts have been in full swing during the year. Both courly, as well as the servants quarters attached, #1 in decent repale. They have very nearly paid their own expenres. Dr. Lowson sald there was a point he wished to direct attention to and upon which he wished to have the opinion of the members. At pre sent the comralties had power to make bye laws for the regulation of the play on the ground, He fessed, along with a lot more people, that there would be what he might term a naval (lavasion durlug the next winter. During the last three or four years the practice of the dowo fide members of the club had been very seriously disturbed by the naval playert. He was under the impression until that day (ba) there was a bye-law which said that naval sob- scribers should folsh play shout four o'clock. Mr. Sercombe Smith said he did not ramember any such bye-law, and he could not find any but he (Dr. Lowson) was certain he had seen it somewhere or other There were a large num- ber of mid-shipmen now on the afation, and even doing the last half-year when they bad only a few ships here, the civil members of the cinb found it diificait to get a few hours' practice. He therefore begged to propose.. "That It Is the general feeling of this meeting that the com mittee should paar a bye-law regulating the play of naval enhacribers on the ground during the entulog winim." SHANGHAI,

SHANGHAI, 29th August, On Friday night's 'peculiarly atrociosa mut der was committed in an alleyway off the Fab xien Road, the victim bilag a woman of about 47 years of age. It appears that the woman had slight difference with her husband, who left home on that account early in the evening and slept at a native hotel for the night. Daring the aight the house was entered by a female servant to the employ of the household, and three men, two of whom, named Lia and Hiß, are known, They commenced operations by blading and Egging the son of their vicilm, a boy of *bout ten years old, and then throwing a straw rope round the woman's neck they dragged her downstairs into the kitchen, where llase was thrown in her face, and a large quilt thrown over her and held until she was suffocated. As som as she was dead, the murderers searched the house in quest of money and valuables which were known to be on the premirer. They succeeded in securing booty to the value of about $1,6co, and after trying to set fize to the house, decamped with the booty, The wemto, before leaving the house, released the boy, and be at once gave the alarm to the neighboatz, who communicated with a married daughter of the murdered woman and began a search for the husband.
