The Chaliman said-Gentlemen, I will with your permission adopt the usual course and take The Report and Statement of Accounts as rend The period under review has as you are aware been the first year of the Company's working and ahhough all work in connection with our plantation has been going on satisfactorily

we regret that owing to the fall in the market piles of Gambier and in a smaller degree to our having to wille off the ex- pensis connected "with the flotation of the. Company, which will not recar, we are not la x postion to pay a d'vidend Our Manager in- forms us that the fall in price of Gambler made jom difference to us at nearly $2000—and as the cost of producina remains the same this mil Come pur profite Mr. Larken gives as reasɔa Borthefall in price ver production, last year's ex- part from Singapore being the largest on record to 1887 the rapit for the year way 180,000 piculs and in 18gy had stisen to 799,610 pleofs, the explore first three months of 197 was 180.994 pleet but for the first thres monika of *te year to bad dropped to 157,608 piculs while the consaniption In Europe and America apports to have remained shout the same. Mr. Laiken considers that it has now touched boltem and that we may expect to realise better priors bls year. As mentioned in the Report we have acquired two plantations during the year on bli advice for $3161 and he writes as that these will show a bardsome profit on the working even at the present low rates. With regard to our coffee plantation Mr. Larken reports that 150 out of the 300 sores we intend planing have been cleared and that too acres are now planted with first class seed, the work has proceeded without any serlous sickness amongst the cnolles employed, an outbreak of which is often a source of much difficulty in the apentag up of new land in this part of the world and Mr. Larken is well satisfied with the pro- gress mide. Beyond the cultivation of Gambler and Coffee a planting portion of our ground with Pará Rabber trees and as the soll Is culiable it is the opinion of Mr. Larken „that there is a great faturs to store for this branch of caltivation. Gecerally speaking our plan tation is going on in a satisfactory manner and although we must have a lule patience before resping the results of our coffee growing. I think as we have a manager who thoroughly understands his business there is no reason to doubt the success of our undertaking. Before moving the adeption of the Report and Sute- ment of Accounts I shall be pleased to answer any questions shareholders may wish to put.

No questions were asked, and the Chairman proposed the adoption of the report and state- ment of accounts.

THE POLITICAL SITUATION IN

Appearances of considerablo agitation in poll tical circles contloge to present themselves. The allestien resolves itself now into briefly this, that three sections of the Constitutional Party have each put forward a candidate for the partielle of Foreign Affairs and are all believed to be Insisting sinhbornly upon their title in the nomination. The Tosa acction, represented by Count Itagaki ard Mr. Hayashi, are said to advocate the selection of Baron Ite Miyoji ; the Progressist section, rep cleated y Count Okuma, Mr. Ozaki, Mr. Oblgashi, and Mr. | Oishi, want to secure the appointment of Mr. Kato-now Minister in London ;-and Mr. Matsuds, together with the Liberals that do not belong to the Tosa and Kwanto coterlo are calling out for Mr. Hesbl Torn. It is not anlikely that the story of this dispate, au sub. mitted to the public, bis bega considerably exaggerated, for the newspapers recounting it bave not hitherto shown themselves at all friendly to the Cabinet. But what they say is tree, the new poli-ical party's prospects are already beginning to be cleaded. MILITARY SPIES IN JAPAN.

VANCOUVER (B. C.). July it

The Osaka Mafulcës states that foreign mill- tary spies are constantly arrivlig at Yokohama. The important naval stations and forts in the viclalty and the proximity of the port to the im- || portal capital are the attractions. Some times as many as twenty are there at one time. At present there are fire foreigners in Yokohama of whom strong evidence has been obtained to identify them as military spies.

The authorities know that there are Japanese traitors who serve these foreign splex, and a strict search is beleg fastitated to discover these men. When fou:& they will receive condign punishment very soon, as the evidence le all fn. It is said that the trial will bring scandal to cer talo circles I create a profound sensation, but the Japanese Government is bound to observe nenitallly and show at the same time that their desire is to be ranked 13's first-class 'civilized nation by the United States.
