He felt confident that English ship Owners would do their part to secure a fair share of trade to all parte of the world, and they might assume that the British flag would be in evi- dence even at Tadlen was. At the same time it was impossible ta ignore the afvaliy of the Germans fo that part of the world, and it might, at no distant fat, be a matter for the shareholders of the Company to say whether It might not be necessary to have an increased capital, so as to meet Ge man competlilon. W.FE MURDER

Won Hrang was chaned with haring on 1818 September. 1897, felanloosly, wilfully and with mallce sfereikenght murdered one Cheung St Kia in Victails, in 'bis Colo. y,

Prisoner pleaded not gulity.

Han, W. M. Goodman, Allerney General, (astracted by Mr. H. L. Denny) prosecuted and Dr. Ho Kai appeared for the defence,

The following jary was empanelled B. X. Mehta, F. Lammert, G. C. Hayward, H. Cromble, C. W.-Eangett, A. W. Schellas and E. Mirow.

The Altorney General, widdressing the jury, rld that the prisoner stood charged before them with the very serious offence of wilial murder. Ho asked them to consider the case with the sama pallence and enre as they would if the man tried

WEE

Ecrorean. The secured had the advantage of being defended by Dr, Ho Kel and Counsel explained that when in cases of murder the prisoner had no Counsel, it was stipulated in the law that be should be provided with one at the expense of the Court The deceased woman was the wife of the accused man and Counsel thought that when the jury had heard the evidence, they would be of apiclon that about half-past seven on the even- ing of 18th September last the accused man killed his wife by catting her throst and that the only excuse, the accused could arge for such a deed wis that in his opinion she was a bad woman. It would be shown lo the evidence that she had left her husband thortly before this murder and relased to live

with bio. Sometimes husbands and wiwes could not agree and the fault lay on both sides. The poor woman at least was dead and could not give bes sccount of the murder. Whatever the medis of the rquabble between them it was perfectly clear that the mere fact that the wife refused to live with the husband was no excare for his reizing hér and cutting her throat. It was equally clear that such an ect as that if proved to have been committed in this Colony wilful murder. The deceased woman, Cheung by whatever person, I was in point of w

SI Kin, was only 21 years of age at the time of her death and had been married about five years. They were people in humble circumstances and until within about three or four months of Cheung Sha Wan, a village voir Sam-sai-pola the woman's death were living in a place called Chinese territory. The first incident Counsel was able to bring before them occurred on 13th June he left him and asked a man named Ha On to last when the accused man beat the woman and

take her abroad She had been only a few days with this man when prisoner went to the girl's mother at No 12 New Sirect, Victoria, and the mother fetched her daughter from Ha Os. They appeared to have patched up the quarrel and lived together agale from 25th Juna to about 27th August in No. 1 Now Street. Thay bad practically no means of living and possibly that might have been the reason why on ayih August she became a servant in a sali family and the husband in the meantime went to live in a coolle boase. The wife remained with this family till roth September, on the 11th and Fath she worked at a leather factory and from the 12th to the 18th (the day of the murder) she helved her mother to make slippers and during these fast eight days she slept four nights at her mother's and the other four at a cubicle
