BORNEAN AFFAIRS.

VERY NEAR A DEADLOCK.

P.ivate letters from. British North Bernes dis- close a very curious state of affairs as regards official matters. It would seem that the the Scalor eficials and the Governor, and the Governor and the managing Director Mr. Cowie, officials generally and the Court of Directors,

are all at loggerheads. The first matter is one of common notoriety, one of the parties concerned having takea good care to ventilate bis version of the malter."

Woods, of Wechow, to the hand grievously wounding him. Mr. Woods Ita British subject. He has been established in business at Wochow for some time past and is the agent of the Daring at that port. It is sald that he was wounded while trying to prevent the Captalo using bis revolver.

Latest news from Wachaw is to the effect that an American missionary named Randal witnessed the shooting and that Dr. McDonald of Wachow, Mr. G. W. Gouthwath, chief engineer of the Kong-pak, the Chinese boatswain and the night watchman of the. Dosing will be among the witnesses for the protection.

It is rumored that before the prisoner could be got out of Wochow some relatives of the deceased Compradore effered $500 for Captain Toleman's head and that therefore had there been much delay in shipping him off to. Canton there would assuredly have been an attempt, a very desperate attempt, made by the "tough" of Wachow to kill the men,

I bear that Mr. Woods yesterday despsiched the Dosing down river bound for Hongkong, placing Captain Marsh (lately of the Foon Soon Steamship Co's steamer Chingpo) to charge. It is to this lalter gentle the pabilc of Labuan especially are indebted for faformation as to more what actually occurred. He resigned the service Home years ago, but being a great friend of the present Governor was re appointed as magistrale at Penungah and was subrequenily sent to the Labuk River to try and catch Mat Salleb, Belog extremely unpopular personally, his p potatment and selection gave deep offen ce to all ibere over whose heads he had thas stepped. Bat the legality of this action by Mr. Cowle appears to be disputed by the Governor, and so far from acting on the dismissal, the officer stayed for a week at Government House and according to all accounts bas returned to hit post resident at Kudal.
