The Spaniards and their sympathisers are as wetry of waiting as say | body, and will be glad when the suspensa is over and the whole figut codd one way or the o'her. The delay to worse than the coming final straggle can be. Food is growing appre clably scarcer every day; beef seems to be still obtainable somehow, at fancy prices, and there is apparently an inexhaustible stock of sardines, floor and rice, all at high rates, of course. for ordinarily well fed people, this is a very Imbed bill of lare, and practically nothing else can be got. Even sweet-potatoes are laxarles now, and the prudent man who laid in steck a few weeks ago is the fat of all Patates of the other persuasion ceased to extat long ago; other vegetables are seldom seen, and to small quandles The poor must be having a terrible time. To add to the other discomforts of itle here, almost all the washing has got lost, The laundry places were chlely at and beyond the village of Man-Zaloya, on ibe right biok; (aorth) of the River pasig, now in the enemy's banda. Is a contently asserted by natives that the washing will all come out right enough some day; bat meantime nobody can ร through the lines of the oppising aimles, sad most of the European residents are la a pitiable state. Some are completely shirtless, some have shirts that can be washed in thels business offices in town while the wearers lie in bed, and some are discovering shops where few new shirts can be bað. Ta a tropical climate, the quesiton of clean clothes is no trifle.

TRID
It is believed the American troopships will trrive in a day or two: but I am surprised that there are people who still 6elleve it, for we have bees believing it from time to time for ages, an is seems, I am begluning to think the American troopships are a myth, the American army a dream, and the whole canilnent of America s sage Yankee lavention. Soon I shall cease to believe there is any such place.
Here are European troops numb aing over Ave thousand the numbers are differently stated from time to time, and may be maylbing up to Llie on board the refuge-ships in the barbour 20,000, but I have not men any large body of is even worse. There, people are necessarily them in any one plzer, and ratilag together the crowded to the very last point of discomfort, and numerous niall forces 1 have seen, I think there fare miserably. The abips are Spanish, dirty, are not more than ten and probably not much small, and utterly uncomfortabic. It is not sar. more than live thousand in all. On the otherprising that some of the people have elected to hard, according to the Spanish verson the rebels veturn ashore and take risk, r ther than "pig have only an insignificant number of men, nat it out any longer on board. one tenth of them decently simed for fighting. Bot partag over the Spanish version, I should think there are probably twelve or fifteen thon- and rebel soldiers in the immediate vicinity of Manila. Probably more than half of them have ifies a few of their own Importation by surrepit tous mesna Sefore the Americans came, a few captured at Covite when the Spanish fleet was destroyed, few captured in ukirmishes in the woods, and a large proportion, inked over to the rebel side by native troops seceding from Spafa. The rebels can never have had the trafaing which any Feropean army should have hed they have only their own native lenders, of whom the chler Emilio Aguiasido, a young man laderd to become a Father of his Coontay,", for he is only twenty-szven. His army is to all intente and purposes an uniralded rabble (judged by Zupopean standards) certainly not as well armed as the Spaniards, not provided with artillery, and the Spaniards deny that the rebels have the sympathy of the country. Very well, it should be simple enragh for a compact body of Europeans to hold their own sgalost such rabble, without having to enlist the doubital ad of the wabbles own brothers.
WAR GOSSIP.
No further prifcalars appear to have reached Hongkong regarding the attempted assassion- lou of General Agalnaldo, the Philippine leader. One of the rebel Chiels realding here was seen -day, and he said that all he knew was that he would-be murderer attempted to use poolaid, but was frustrated before he could reach he chief. Further particolars are expected lo
couple of days.
1
Sifin Aichlo, a Philippine leader who has been residing in Hongkong for some time past, has returned to Maalla. We understand that he and General Ayuinaldo together with others concerned in the Spanish Indemntly have come to an amicable settlement regarding the morta which was in dispule in the court here. The smount la querilan, $400,500, Is to be devoted to the rebel cause with the exception of soms thousands of dollars that are to be used for the educallan and training of promising young Filipinos.
At the Malate Powder Magazins, situated in the southern subarb of Manila, some two miles from the City walls, the rebels have been held In check for three wecks, and the Spinlards have been day and night pouring s 10t and shell into the woods jast beyond. If they hit nathlag- but trees, says cur correspondent, they at any rate make the place very datariling for rebels.

"LINDULA","MECCA", INQUIRY,
CONDUCT OF THE NATIVE-PASSENGERS,
The Lindula-Maceo In'qulay was concluded at Calentte on the 6th instant. The third officer of the Micca, who was na duty, said the Cap- tain's orders were "Fall speed ahead." and the Mecca was thus golor when she collided. The third engineer of the Lindula said the shait which broke was only pat in at Singapore in February last. All evidence tends to show that the naire passengers behaved in the most cowardly way, jumping late the boxis and cap- sizing them, seizing ||febels and rushing to the sides of the boat. On reaching the Zindult, two European soldiers rendered great sselstance. The Court will duly submit report to the Government.
HOW A BRAVA MAN DIED An eye-witness gives the following graphic, the forca, when the fil-facte ship was soulog account of the conduct of Captain Parkman, of

A beat of the Indula containing the second officer, WAS' laging by a rope attached to the Mecca. He was calling out & the Captain to leave the ship and save his life, but the cry was quite un
heeded. Captain Parkman ordered the sexcus. ny to leave the wheel and save his Hle, which the latter did in double quick time by sidlog down the rope lato the boat, The brave Cap- tain, the fait rano on board, could "bave done the same, but he preferred to go down with his ship, Drawing out a kalle, he quickly cat the rope and the boat was instantly swept away by the strong current. The doomed Mecca, with ber gallot Captats, plunged down Immediately afterwards,
The names of the three European officers lost vertel and the Lindufa, were Captain Parkman, on board the Mecca in the collision between that

But here is a pecller thing, In all the out posts I have vished, I saw few Spanish soldiers, In several ches the native caps were entirely alone, with only a Spanish officer here and there to keep an eye on them, and the bulk of the Europazo trans sermed to he same way to the rear of the figbig on Now that the supply of eativesharos low, Europeant sis sandwiched among them, sud a roll-call is a strange sprotacie, the black ma and the white man alternating all along the line, e'ch man watching his The small river gunboats on the Pasig, which neighbour fairely through his eye corners, as are to nails lo guarding the approaches to the I calculating the chances of a treacherous City of Manila egalost rebols from up the river baronet in the back, from the respective stand-or Americans from the Bay, now all carry ex point of the one who gires and the one who tempored armene pissing, made of spare boller fakes.
