The stage was held by Mr. Brough for the greater part of the evening. Mrs. Broagh was exceedingly fascicilog an Mis Darcy, after wards Mr, Greenwood, the lady with a memory that betrayed her on every conceivable occa- sion. Miss Hardy as Mildred Coleman was an exceedingly charming bride, and Miss Harington as Vloist Tracy lent to part the necessáry freshness and briskoens of character. Miss Templa deserves praise for der natural rendering of Markham, ina mald, and Miss Watt-Tanner was motherly and domestic. The men's parts were all satisfac- torly played, but special credit should be given to Mr. Shice for his impersonation of George Greenwood and to Mr. Plimmer as Ferdinand Sinclair. As has been already mnounced the Broughs will give only two more performances in Hong kong. Tonight Sydney Grundy's comedy A 'FairofSpectacles" will be produced." This play was attempted by the Hongkong" A. D. C. to November last in bonour of the visit of the Straits and Shanghai visitors, bit it proved a failure, and the A. D. NOTES FROM THE NORTH.

(From our own Correspondent.)

Tientsia, March 18th, 1898. Nothing has so lar come of the sensations! There was a fine barbour, but the coast, in news I recently seat you, and you may be right the words of the first governor, "fell almost to having regarded the wire about Japan AN A perpendicularly isto iba ses," and left no room "bander," as I frankly admit not having been for a falure city or decks. The island was able to ascertain anything further. I know for a fact that a very, im- portant despatch was telegraphed home from greatest commercial depôt of the East. The

The colony not only pays its way, but makes a very bandsome contribution to the cost of its defences, which are maintained in imperial interests. In the six years 1886-1891 Its qulay on fortlications was £75,000 and at the present date it pays £37,000 a year on ac. count of these works, their maintenance, and their garrison. We can therefore unhesitatingly arest that Hongkong has done its duly. There are six large docks belonging is British subjects and available for are be our wirships, large storesní cosi, reserves of ammunition, and re- pairing workshops. If Hongkong. were lost, and we had not the all'ance of Japan, we should be powerless in the Far East.

By the treaty of Nankin only the Island of Hongkong was ceded to England. But the bar bour is enclosed between the mainland-which remained Chinese-to the netth, and the leland which is now British in the south, Is the Chinese tenkory aro

It is of course jubilantly asserted by all those who haya hotly maintained there never was and never could be Cassini convention as-a proof pos, of its nonexistence, But do we not know China well enough to know that she would Just as soon swindle Russia as anyone else. It may, then, safely be said that the possession of Mira Bay by k loreign Power would not only render the harbrar of Hongkong absolutely worthless from the raval point of view, bat would also ultimately mean the commercial ruinlay her. of the colony. Owing to its rapid growth more breathing g'oand is necessary. New docks and new depois are priftcted, and it seems abso. Intely essential to arquire mora territory is which to place them. Kowloon and the lsland of Hongkong are already "fall uo." Now Mka By is not only one of the finest harbours in the world, but it le also peculiarly well placed from the strategic standpoint. Is" is evident that the actor excels in elderly parts, but even after all we have seen of Mr. Brough, we were not prepared for such a display of bla-seized. trionic power and such a complete mastery of the delicate shades of feeling. Mr. John Hare himself could not more completely sink his iden ilty in that of the delightful old optimist, or giro fioer expression to the changing phases of Character. There is nothing of imitation in Mr. Brough's randering of the part ; it is as disilac ilve and consistent as that of Mr. Hare, and yet ¡1 is widely different. The mild Benjamin's struggle with his better mature under the barden Ing influence of his terrible brother-bis at- tempts to stifle the feelings which will bilogy a sudden dimness to the borrowed spectacles~~ could not be surpassed. Altogether, the creation is one of which any comedian of our time would have reason to be proad. Mrs. Brough is as charming as the limitations of the part of Mrs Goldfinch will permit. All the lesser parts are excellent. The whole play takes place in the Goldfinchs' drawing-room, and upon the perfect- ing of this solitary scene no small pains had evidently been bestowed. There will only be two repetitions of the comedy, whetess, on its merits, even in Calcutta, it ought to be good for a fortnight of bumper könses,
