THE GREEN ISLAND CEMENT CO., LTD.

The minib etdinary general meeling of share. holders in the above company was held at the office al Messis. Shewan, Tomes & Co., No 9: Praya Central at noon to-day, Mr. R. Shewad was in the chair and there were also present Messi. C. P. Chater, J. Oenage, LI Slug (Consul?- Ing Commites), G. Murray Bain, I. R. Michael, Fine Wa Chuch, W. S Baller, D. Gitlles, Ho Tang, E, S, Kelly, P. J. V. Jorge (Secretary).

The Chairman sald-Gentlemen, as you are all familiar with the contents of the Report and cenun' it is not necessary to read them now, The net profit = $58,738.31, as against $46,117,13 last year, but the dividend proposed is 25 per cent on the vid shares as against y per ceni list time. We are brand to put something to Rekir's In accordance with our Articles, so we bare named the neminal sum of only $5,000 fox ibit parpole. The reason for this is that find a strong feelleg exisis amongst the old

share bolders that anythis g put aside for Reserve:

or carried forward, la next yest would bønefi the new shareholders, to a greater extent iban the old, and to silay this feeling and satisfy the old sharesholders it is deemed best to devote, as far as possible, the whole profit to payment of dividend this year. Shareholders mast how- ever bear in mind that this is a very exceptional case, that our policy must be to build up a good Reserve and that anything approaching such a dividend need not be looked for agalo.” Owing to the increased cost of coal our prices fed to be raised accordingly. This no doubt had the effect of checking sales, but to any case I do not think we could have sold much more than we did, as our stock at the end of the year was only moderate one though larger than the previous years which was much too low, At Green Istand the factory was kept steadily at work, and we managed to increase the production by about 8 për cent on last year's, but although we conllous our efforts in this direction I doubt If we ball manage to squecie much more ont of our present installation over there. We may be able to do « little better when the Schofor Kilo is in full swing, but that process is still in the experimental stage and Canol yet be sronounced an undoubted success. As we anticipated we have bad difficulty with the cllmste, quailty of coal &c, but these have been fairly well overcome, and as you can understand It is well worth all the trouble we have had if only to obtain a Kim which will barn coal at half the cost of ont present fuel -coke. Our trouble at the present moment is however of another 'kind and arises from the bricks swelling and sticking la the top of the kiin instead of passing easily down to the fire below, but with a little more experience this will no doubt be got over too and we shall then have a very improved and ecasaules kiln. I menitan these detalls at some shareholders appear in think one has only to build a few king and start making Cement right away, bol it is -one-thing-to-build a kiln end another thing to get it to work properly as was found in the case of the Hoffman Kin. The Schafer Klin should however effect a great saying and it was not without exrefully weighing the pros and cons that we decided to ty li nor have we so far any reason to regret our melan. At Deep Water Bay the result has been dirappolating owing chiefly to the high price of coal. We have a new superintendent there now, and other changes have been made lo the staff there which we think will effect an improvement Insk-future. The siis for the New Works at Hek Un is nearly all levelled and will we thlok be ready for build Ing operations sexi month. A good part of the machinery has been ordered from home but we do not expect to make another call of Capital till, say 101b june next. You will notice that 1,210 new shares have not been taken up by the old shar helders who were entliled to them, and asample time has bron given those shavebulders to come forward, we now propose to proceed at once to forfet: these shares

The Examinations lo' Piano forin playing were held on Nov. 27th and Dec. 41b, 1897 22 Candidates presented themselves, of which 3 entered for the Sealar, g for the Intermediate, and to for the Elementary Secilane. All ware successful, except of the candidates whe entered for the Senior Sections. The selected places were, for the most port accurately played, though there appeared to be carious d'fference of opinion with regard to the "Tempo" of some of the pieces, and a determination, almost heroic, on the put of some of the perfarmers, to ignore the marks of expression. The Sent: and Arpeggio play'ng way, on the whole, very credliable, and we were glad to notice that same regard had been paid to our advien of last year and as a conseqence, there was much leas`olibe "scrambilog" that was so appetent at the las examination. We don't know why but can hardly think it was on account of objections by the cricket club, as we do not ses that any harm need be done in the plich.
