THE AMAZONS.

Last night the Brough Comedy Company gave their second and last performance of "The Amazons" at the City Hall before a full house. That the efforts of this talented company woro appreciated by the audience of courie goes with oõi maying. The whole house was kept in continualiour of faughter throughout the ev814. log and the dialogne was as frequeally brought to"a riandstill from this cause as from the re- peated bursts of applause which time and again rang out.

Shareholders have occasionally asked us whether it wontd not be advisable to erect mers crushing machinery. We must bear in mind, however, that only a certato amount of stone can be ralied from one shaft and that if we put up adel tonel stampers we must also sink other shafin to feed them with. This there la no doubt we shall do in the future, but I think you will all agres with me that it is wiser to test our way at the present time and not extend our operations very much unul we begla to receivo.substantial i profits from our present workings, and I do not see any reason why we may not confidently look forward to this result in the near futuro. The Broughs will appear this evening in “A Village Priest" by Sydney Grandy, and as this.. plece has not bitherto been produced in Hong- kong a bar per kouss should result. THE ENGLISH LOVE OF JUSTICE.

"A diaper was given last month at the Albion Tavero, Aldersgate-street, London, by the Weavers' Company: The company included Lord Jasilce Vaughan Williams, who, in re tponding for "The Bench and the Bar," said that, besides the Navy and the Army, one of the strangest forces of this country, one of the strongest bulwarks for their protecilon, was their love of justice. (Cheers.) This love of justice which they saw donlabel among the English people not only at home but also in every one of her colonies. He would be very sorry an at occasion like that to say a word that seemed lo east a slight open their generous and enthusiastic neighbours, the French, but did they not feel, when the subject of Justice was meusfoned, thai it was some bing to belong to a country where not only real laws erfsted and equal jusiice was administered to all, bat where such a thing as izial betera a secret tribunal was absolutely im-

possible? In the struggle which was now going on among the nailont of the world to record the largest share of be commerce of the world, their best hope of securing their share consisted not so much in any appeal to force, but is the laci that wherever the English commercid com masity went they carried with thein bhal reas of justice whichree-shmendid Engliça commerce and English men of commerce in every ane with whom they dealt (Cheers.) Was it ten much to hope that whether they had to deal with me like the giant Aiddle, with wham they were Eghting now, or with the Borra in Sooth Africa, or with the people of the Hinterland lo West Altice, they would never allow any desire for their own personal aggrand zement to interfere for one moment in their dealing with ibem, &t national justice † : (Cheerr.)

THINGS SLOWLY LEARNED.

Tuka is a man in Bootland who used to write many readable and instructive things. He signed himself A Country Parson," and bright parson he is. One of his says is entitled, "Things Blowly Learn ed," a good line of thought for anybody.

Well, here is one of the things slowly learned that disesse doesn't jump on a man like newild eat of a tree, but devalops from soods and conditions, fost as roses and woods do. We who write and print the essays of which these lines are one, have said this a hundred times; but all the people don't seem to have thoroughly graped the iden yet.

For if Mr. Theodors Treasure alone had done so, ho wouldn't have andared ten years from attacks of rheumatic fever. In November, 1891, he says be had fearful time with it. He tells us in a letter that he had dreadful pairs all over his body, and was 40 sore he couldn't be anything to touch Al Ern the bedclothes hurt him, like a fosther against a sore ya got little or no sleep," he says, ས toulag sil the night long, and trying to get esso by a shift of position.

"I had a foul taste in the month, and spat ap a great quantity of slimy phlegm. My appetite loft me, and the little food I forced down gave me great pain as the chest and sides. For five months I was confined to my room, most of the time unable to
