TRAINING NOTES,

The galloping yesterday (Sunday) morning,.

|

did not commence unul after 8 o'clock, and the encicaure was thronged with a large concoures of sparting enthusiasts, who anxiously watched the performances of the several cracks in their 1837 spins previous to the races. Several ladies also graced the proceedings with their presence, The first ponies to have a spin_wers Mr. David's Derby griflus Statesmu, Rublo and Bannerman. They went together for the mile and half, and very Interesting pow took place, Bannerman (Sampion) || eventually winning by length from States man, Ruble boing ten of twelve lengths in the rear. The quarters were 36, 1.071, 141, 5.15, 3.51 3.37. Tyne (late Langkat), with Mr. Cox of Shanghai in the saddle, went a mile is the very fast time of 2.11). The last quarter was covered in 31) sec, and the pony finished very strong.

·

Mr. Hart Buck galloped his Derby crack Oilver for the fall Derby distance, but I only clocked him at the calle and quiter post, which distance he accomplished in the splendid time of 1:47. I was told the time for the mile and a bali was 3 tối which would make the first quarter 391 seconds. The other quarters were 34, 1.0, 1.41, 2.15 and F.47. I believe he had fall weight up and was gaileping without shoes. It is interest- ing to compare this gallop with that of Yenesol who galoped later on, there being only half a second difference in favor of laita, pony, who His full time however galloped with shoes on, W** 35, 1.10, 8.43, 3.15, 3.461. He was joined at three quarter mila post by Orinoco who brought him bome in dino style, the Derby favour- fte galloping wey freely and doing the Inst quarter in 31 seconds. The best pow of the morning was accomplished by Rookwood with Mr. Burkill in the saddềo, who covered the ille and a quarter la 2.453 or one second quicker than Yoneset. His quarter times were 95, 1.07, 1:43, 3.14 3.458

his last quarter being done in 30 sec. Spring. Orwell galloped a mile to 35, 1.10, 4.45 a 153, Geld went the Valley Stakes distance in ta, 1.06,

4.39.

This (Monday) morning only quarter mile and ball mille spurts were attempted but nothing sensational was accomplished.

According to ray usual castom I now give my prognostications and anticipations of to-morrow" racing, but must first premise that this years races are exceptionally open, all the pontes being in splendid condition and an upset may be expected at any moment

THX many friends of Inspector Mann will regret to learn that his wife died early this morning while being conveyed to the hospital from her residence, No, a Station. Mrs, Mann had been siling for some time past and her death is mainly due to Bright's Disease. Mrs. Mann's bright and cheerful good nature, sad her fine social qualities endeared her là all, and her death will come as a shock, to very many friends. The deepest sympathy is expressed wük Mr. Mann in his sad bereavement. The faneral took place at 4:30 pm, to-day and there was a large attendance at the grave. The coffin was coveted with beautiful wresṭks and crosses from members of the Palice force and other friends. SAM SILLARS, of the "Lancs," and Fred, Ball, Marine of H.M.S. Edgar, got under the weather on Saturday night and behaved outrageously. The former was grossly Indecent in the bar of the Man at the Wheel, Queen's Road West, and to-day ho was fined $15, la default to go to gaol for six weeks. Mr. Bali made his deður at the Praya East Hotel and something harlog angered him, he struck a || young lady named Margaret Nicoll, a couple of heavy blows about the head and ear with his fist. The prosecutrix acts as Hebe at the hotel and to day Mr. Wodehouse, after bearing her | tale of won, ordered Iberedcosted amplhibian to pay a fice of $ro or love the chance for a beer for three weeks

On Saturday alternoon the Hongkong Volun. isert marched to the Polo Ground and went through some useful drill. Major Sir John Car- logtop, Commandant, was on the ground is uniform at 5 o'clock, and he marched back to headquarters with the Corps. The Field Battery men held a meeting in the Inaltate at the cless of the parade and it was practically amanimously resolved to recommend that la future periodical examfailons be held for premotions to all non- commissioned ranks, and that the Commandant be asked to make selections for such promotions from those men who were thoroughly.qualided after examination. "At present a vacancy in the bombardier rank is filled by election amongst the men, and in the ordinary course of events the bombadler is promoted by seniority to corporal and then to sergeant although he might bays out in only the minimum number of drille and be quite lncompetent in his duties.
