Deficit
7 97
This is frugal, truly; though in England it is the rule for people with small pay to do their own washing and keep no servants. Moreover, we object to a man paying a rupee a month to the Church if he cannot pay his debts. Tobacco also is not a necessity. Thus the deficit could be cut down; but there is no allowance in the list for clothes, nor for the numerous extras which cannot be avoided. The moral of it all is that, however desirable marriage may be from all points of view, there are circumstances in which it is out of the question. It is too much to expect that an employer who can get work done for a small wage should pay more for it simply because his workman chooses to incur abilities and responsibilities which his position does not warrant.
