In recent we mentioned, on the strength of what we rend in some windy Frisco dallles, that the Pacific Mail Co's Steamer China had put up a récord pa tha vayage across the Pacific to Frisco, The claim to a "Record" has been challenged, and in the Yokohama Bor of Cu. ries of the 22nd citimo wo find a circumstantial statement on the subject reading as follows ---
We published in our last issue an account of the fast trip of the China, the log showing sha had made the raáu of 3393 knots at the averago rate of 174 knots per hour, and this was claimed to be the secord isip on the Paclɓim for the number of miles steamed. The San Francisco papers have full accounts of the trip and state that she made 437 knois la one day's run and it la claimed that this boats all runs for
24 hours made on the Padlóc by a merchant vessel, the Average speed being stated as 18,85 kools, but The San Francisco Call pablishes a utilking It does not figure out that way as the averago is 1 trifle short of 17.8 knots; The Canadian Paiement by the Chinese Consul in that port:-
clic Steamship Co.'s employees deny the claim and as proof of their side of the question have furnished us with the leg of the gand outward vayaga of the Empress of Japan which is as follows:-

MARITIME CUSTOMS.
Holders al Chinesa securities cannot bot regard with much misgiving the reported attempt of Russia to obtain control of the administration of the Chlaene Imperial Maritime Castors, the proceeds of which have been pledged as the secarity for their loans. If that design is seriously entertained It can only have a sinister import. The pesent administraiion of the Customs Is Imparilal sind honest, und so far ay Its power extends the bondholders need have no of four of Rey allenation of the revenues pledged to them. But would there be the same security with the administration practically under the control of the Russian Government, for that is what it would amount to? Il, for instance, China were unable to meet the financial obliga tions anlar which she has placed herself to the Resina Government, would the latter retrain from laying hands upon the Customs revenue? It may be said that the Russian Government may be trusted not to perpetrale any act of financial violence. 4,170, Total knots. From this it will be seen that the China's claim of having made a 437 miles' run for 24 hours is not in it a little bit, for on this trip the Empress of Japan made ́419, 433, 433 and on one day 441, the latter being at the rate of 38.4 knots per hour-citly a knot faster than the China 'claimed for her best run of 437 knots. It is now in order for afficers of the China to prove their record, for her log does not show the Empress record.
IS ENGLAND'ARMING ?
Under this head the New York Harald anys:- The sensational report from London that the Admiralty are preparing to call out reserves, and that warships are being burriedly made ready for the event of complications in the Far East, does not appear to be borne out. It is true that the dockyards are busy fiting out ships of the Channe rqendror, but that is quite in the normal coord of events, as also is the de parture of Vice-Admiral Seymour for his new command to the Far East. Nothing is known in Canada of the alleged orders for commision- ing Ruxillary crafters of the Empress lae, nor does there appear to be any truth in the stale ment that arrangements were being made to relaforce Hong-Kong by the overland route. Reassurlog sports have been sent by the United States Ministers in Peking and Tokio regarding the alleged intention of Ebropean Powers to divide up Chinese taritory. The outfoole is, after all, not so black at some of our contemporaries across the Channel, notable the Datly Chronicle, would depict it. Chicago wheat speculators, however, have augerly.seized mpon alarmist reports to run up prices.
