("Host, hear.") Now I come to the particular- charge that we have done our best to faster foreign at the expears of British trado. To pires the facts clear before you, I mast Gist state that | the outward trade from Great Britain to the Far
East, or at all events from London, is much less la ball then the homeward trade, and it is lamponsible for us to fill our outward steamers from London with English cargo Habey were to sell wiib only English cargo ou board, they would all, on the average, ball fall ; and even with the assistance of the Continental cargo which we draw to London, I may say that, on the average, our ships throughout the year, ailing from London are only about two-thirds
trade. The contest which 'was golog in the Strakte teado conilased, therefore, for a consider- able time, but we have at length secured

this trade, with
a conference in which English and Gorman Hines are equally interested, and if the rates have not risen to a thrilling point, for they are about zos. per ton, they are at all events better than when we were loading ships at rates which did not pay for taking on board and discharging the cargo. Now, gentlemen, I do not desire to take any credit to the company in there matters. I regret even being compelled to deal with the subject in say shape or form, but an secaration gainst this company has bera somewhat extensively veelsted by a section of the press, and it is therefore my duty to meet that accURL= tos: Our action in this matter has not been determined by the fact that we are a mail company; for, as you are aware, the mail service makes it necessary for us to find about two million, or two and ́s quarter mililon pounds of revenus, in freight and passage money, in the best way we can. If we did not find that revenue this company would dissolve like the baselors fabric of a vision." Ost wishers are therefore quite nawrung when our position as mail contractors fr attacked.. But our policy l❘ that of a British company, which is keenly afire to British intereste, and I believe in this respect represent the go-aral feeling of the ship
owners of this country.
