If it has any inportance at all, it should be severely censured. It is wrong anyhow, but if it does not matter, the wrong can be overlooked, while if it does matter, It should not be overlooked.

Sassoon's tablet belag to proceed from Singapore to Chextipo imme-placed in the Synagogue. That matter, as far as be knew, had not been discussed tefore by Mr. Belillos and the trusteel. Mr Sassoon's letter arrived here on about the gth or roth January. It was about three or four days before January 17th that he first heard from members of the community that Mt. Bellies objected to the tablet. He did not hear it from the trustees, When he went to Mr. Belilios it was to learn it was true that he objected. Witness had received a letter from Mr. Moses saying that Mr. Bellifes would buy the lot and hold it for the community for a reasonable tims. The words "site in Kennedy Road" might have been used fastead of lot." Witness handed the letter to Mr. Deacon and had never seen it or had it read to him alace. We are strongly tempted to plunge into a critical analysis of the ilst of recipients, with a running fire of comment; and, to be brutally candid, the only reason why we
not is that Wo сал find much better employment for our columns and our time, taxed to the utmost already by that tedious Synagogue case. To put the matter in a nutshell, public services are better not rewarded than clumsily rewarded. With an effort, we repress an inclination to revert to "the Ink-diately. pot Incident." We hope that of all the official bunglers there may be two or three who will accept our words of wisdom, and be careful in future about rewards. When a man renders any public service he either thinks of a reward or he does not. If he has his eye on some possible reward he deserves to get none, and If he has not it does no harm when he gets none. The public is not so dense as to overlook real merit. When occasion arises a reward may sometimes be given gracefully, appropriately and without room for criti- cism, but it is seldom so, and as a rule it is dangerous to attempt rewards of this sort. Nine times out of ten the chances are that A. S. WATSON & CO., LD, they will go wrong and this time they have gone very wrong indeed. Again we see how much more advantageously the Colony could be managed if it could ma- nage itself.
