NOTES FROM THE NORTH,
(From our own Correspondant.)
TIENTSIN, November 6th, Tientsin is not a place of any particular reputation in other Chias poris, not because it has no reputation worthy of celebrity, bat chiefly by reason of its faccessibility for three months out of the year. Other folks have coma to consider it a "dull-sort-of-fitle-out-of-the-way- corner-up-world." Now to some taxies, viilated by the love of perpetual rush and tarroll res presented by the Shanghat Band, this may be true; but to those content to find ite anjayments and the excitemerits of life a wee dip below the surface, Tientsin has some very solid ard perpetual attractions, and these have been very much #x evidence of Kate, fax Tientsin's better nature and most sacred feelings have been stirred. This morning the kindly, genial, cosmopolitan group of men and women who represent Tiezt:in, stood together on the Ewo jetty and watched tog swing slowly and majestically out lato the stream bearing on her poop a man whom it has been Tientsio's | pride and beseft to know for fifteen years, and whom it is Tientsia's polyinant grief to lose. Honour and price go with bin who has gone; bat "He will come back," "He can't stop away from Tientsin," were among the confident asser- lans of those who watched the kindly fece of Edmund Cousles grow'gradually disinct as the splendid tug went rapidly down river, and the 7 assembly turned to leave, save at heart to think that at last they had to face a social and meal. cipal ille to Tientsin from which the tact and consideration of Mr. Cousins will to sorely mlased. The past week bas marked a uniqat er in Tientsin's experience, and I believe in the annals of the Princely House. 1 doubt whether any member of Messrs. Jardine, Maible. son's firm has ever received such a spontaneous and cosmopoliten oration as that received by Mr. Edmand Ceasles on bis departure from Tientale, and certainly, not even the memory of the oldest inhabliant can furalsban instance where such a tribale of esteem and affection, sad such a "send off" has been accorded kay on the road between Yokohama and Odawara and Yokohama and Toklo. The driver of ibla

At one time, when the really magnificent affair came off on the and in Ginse quer er in Tokio was full of diaband: the Gordon Hall, which was converted into relainers of daimle, a hue and cly was set up bower of beauty with chrysanthemums, greenery the cosch went past, the carslegs being imme- and rich Chinese embroideries, and filled to diately pursued by a crowd of desperate two- ore. flowing with "welled dames and ist," the worded man who would ce. ainly have mat-rafsondere of the gathering being the present. dered all these on the coach bad they en

Now, it no secret that the representatives of the Princely Houce are not as rale prone to easy the public affections before mand Crasins enjoyed had nothing to do with them in this way, and the popularity which Ed.

But his position undoub- knew how to utilize, and his career here affords a very pleasleg example of what might be the social Infinence of the Princely House In every rort It ni fe members were actuated by the esme spirit of universal courtesy,
In the "Stray Notes" column of the Rob Chronicle, “ F. A. G." writer :—
In the early days the revolver, notwithstand Ing certain Consular crders to the contrary, was an almost invailable past of the foreigner's out- ft, and tté "moral effect" was great. Reference has recently! zen made in the Chronicle to the stage-coach that in anewallway days was put
On another occrtion the driver, who bad at the time a waggonette with four horses in charge, Japanese officials refreshed themselves, when he was waiting outside a tex-house while some high observed a two-swordel man glaring at him from the roadway, the man's face working like that o' a tragic actor on the Japanese stage. Slawly the foreigner with one band reachc1 for his weipon, keeping his eye on bis prospective atsallant meanwhile, and suddenly the two. sworded man found himself looking right into did he perceive his danger than ble face, worked the barrel of a big army revolver. No sooner net with anger, but with fright, and be tocoo Huently fed. It was not always advisable even then, however, to use the revolver fer leur al con sequences, and another incident is related in which the coach was pursued for some miles by a prety of wonworded men, bent on mischief, up which occasion the speed of the horses war felled on for escape rather than a resort ta fire-arms. A foreigner who is still a resident of have fired at the powers, but the driver pir suaded him not to do so unless there was actual accessly, and flogging his borses, first with the whip and afterwards with the drag-chale, pat on such speed that the would-be murderers were at last out-distanced,
the fact that Tientsin among His sumcreas The incidents of this departure have revealed other virtues can lay claim to quite a nice plump now with a comfortable rotundity to our sails-

The world of the work has to be carried out In a workmanlike manner and to be satisfaction et your manager or TT other son be may aphoint to supervise the work, and every care will be taken to have the work carried out la the best manner possible. On its completion of the re-election he has to run the machinery during portion of two days, so that if there should be anything wrong it will have to be pat right before he receives his ceriscate stating that the work has been completed;
Had this work been let dark the winter months the lime would have bad be extended to at least x months and the price would bave been considerably higher, Contractors for this class of work always allow a considerable margin both of time and money ferme weather, daring which they can do litifs ono work.
OLIVERS FREEHOLD MINES,

The General Managers, Meinra, John D. Humphreyr & Son, have received the following report from the'r mining manageby the steam thip Tsinan
Mount Macdonald, zand Odober, 1897. Euroka Main Shall sank during fortnight 9 feet; total 275 feet. The reef he crossed over in the west side of shaft na shown to plan, and we are now slaking in country rock and good progress will be made, and the uk of sinking be completed in a short time, whee wa will pro ceed to open out in the reef at the ro feat level, The winze at 100 feet level tank 13 feet, frame se's put la, wladlass and buce fixed, but this and all other work with exaption of sink. lng main shalt will have to be spended until after crushing operations have been resumed, every place being blocked up with ore ready to send to grass.
These were lively times Indeed, and yet It would seem that they are not altogether at an and in Japan, as the growing batility of the coolle class at the open ports alece the way may any day result in marder being done. It is cere sloly unpleasant, if not unsafe, for a foreigner to venture alone among a gang of calles, The walks on the bills in the neighbourhood of the Waterfall are now poslitvely dangerous owing to the demeanour of the coolles engaged on the Waterworks. Only a short time,age, it will be remembered, a foreigner was thrown over a cliff in that neighbourhood by a number of coolies, and saved himself from being killed or seriously Injured by clinging to come shrubs a little way dowe. Last Sunday a resident was descending one of the hill paths in the same direction when encountered a gang of alleaying up some machinery for the Waterworks. They were reing at the time, and without the slight est occasica began to asail him with abusive took no notice, and thes ped without sciaal and disgusting language. Ve'sing bis Ilic, he violence. Naturally such incidents as these are gradually coming known abroad, and they will certainly do lile to encourage the flow of tourists and tourfila gold into the country which some Japanese dezire to see.

What's all this talk about a ministerial change nothing whatever of any promotion beleg up in Peking ? We at the Capital's doors know contemplated for Sir Cherude, nor are we blender to deserve it. As I suggest: 1 la my aware that he has made any particular fast, Sir Clande's appearance is not calculated to inspire astounding respect from British stand palat, but is probably quite the reverse from a Celestial one, and bis moral persuasiveness may obrbir far exceed his physical powers. Any- way if a change li.for some parpore contem- plated, we hope the Government will/fer once icar te to public desire, and give or an oid Indian Officer by way of change.
