BONGKONG'S PUBLIC WORKS.
(With apologies to Bret Harte,) Which I wish to remark,-
And my language is plain,
That for ways that are dark, And for tricks that are valu, Hongkong's Public Works are procullar,—— Which the same I would rise to explain. There once was a drain, By, the P. & O. hoog, Walch had long put a stalo On the ale ol Hongkong, For the reason his quiler was blocked up By a man who could never do wrong. "Twas September the fourth; And quite balmy the skies; Which It might be inferred That the dinio was Ukewise ; When the Daily Press published a para. And the Tesgraph followed theic lia, Then the Governor asked, I was true that the drain Of that man without guile, Could be smelt for a mile;
And the guileless denied its existence,
In a letter that made people smilo.
Then Chatham arest,
And sald "Can this be 7"
I remember a drale.
That discharged in the s:a, From Ewo's through Bowdler's blocked culvert, And the smell has been painful to me.
In the game that ensued
B. did not take a hand,
Bat the shore it was strewed Like the leaves on the strand.
Which Bowdler declared had been mand. Which is why 1 remark, And my language is plato, That for ways that are dark, And for tricks that are valu, Hongkong's Public Works are peculiar,- Which the same I am free to maintain.
