The Daily Fress propounded a few questions this morning to which we are r.co about to attempt replies. We hope to find, when we get hold of the China Mail this evening, that the Editor of that paper has also undertaken to respond. Between the two evening papers the conundrums put forward by our morning contemporary ought to find satisfactory solutions. Whatever happened in the Tichborne, Maybrick, Carew and Bennertz cases, Mr. May is not a bit the worse for the trouble, anxiety and hard work he has had to put up within connection with the recent Investigations into the police scandal. He is as tough as ever and as fresh, and all the better for the very painful experience he has gone through. He has done his work honestly and well, and the Colony ought to be infinitely obliged to him. Whether he ought to have been called upon to do that work is another question altogether.

It is possible that one man can adequately perform the duties of Captain Superin tendent of Police and Superintendent of the Gaol, but it is not just or fair to call upon any one man to do it or to allow any man, however willing, to undertake it. The duties may, at any moment, become 100 much for any one man, however good, to get through. The duties of the respec tive offices are incompatible. The thief catcher and the custodian of the thief ought not to be the same person. It is unfair to the thlaf, or rather to the thleves,
