A RICENT isto of the Tarkkend Gaxatia con- tzios the following interesting information about the new road that the Russians are ‘anguged in constracting across the Pamirs"In May a detachment consisting of ball a battalion of the Tukizian Sappers left Marghilan for the Pamirs la order to carry out the necessary mining oper- ations for the construction of a road from. Borde ba in the Aisi Valley to the Pamir post on the River Murgbab. The road, which is to be Anished this year, will form the prolongation of the Alal reste from Coltcha to Sal-Tash, which was built in 1893 under the direct orders of Baron Vrevsky, When this prolongation has been completed the Pamir detachment will have It communications with Ferghana completely assured. Beildes this' military advantage the new load will also possess a great commercial value, because it will considerably facilitate and Increase the relations between the merchants of Ferghana and the population of the Pamirs, the Kirghiz of the East Pamir and the Tajika of the Khanules of Roshan, Shignan, and Wakhan" (In the last cue-Wakhan remaining Afghan- the Rasilan paper is wrong) which were la cluded in the possessions of Bokhara by the dellmating of 1895. As the most difficult por tion of the work, víz, the passes of the Kizil-Yart and Ak.Baital, at allfades of 14,020ft, and 15.070lt, respectively, will have to be accom. plished this anmmer, it is expected that progress may orove slower than has been assumed in the official programme."
AN interesting ceremony took place at John street Police station, Edgware-road, fately, says a London exchange, when a young woman, Miss Amy Fitzpatrick, of 16, Bell-street, Lison-grove, was presented with a cold mounted umbrella subscribed for by the officers and men of the D. Division serv Ing in the district, in recognition of her gallant conduct in assisting policemin while gisapling with a desperate character named Kenny. About midnight a police- man named Stone was OD date in Bell- street, when Kenny, a paterlace oft-convicted ruffiae, with apparently the sole object of wiping off an old score, waylaid him, threw him to the ground, and, having almost disabled him by kicking him, Atrack him vjolently about the face and bit his hand to the bana. When pearly exhausted Miss Fitzpatrick appeared upon the scene, and promptly went to his karlstance. She took Kenny by the hair and tried to drag him off the solfcemen, but falling in that she clawed at bis face with her finger calls until she had compelled him to relinquish his hold. She then waisted the palferman to delain him unil! farther help suived. Keany was subsequently charged and sentenced to six months hard labout. Stone, who is still on the, sick list, slates that but for the young woman coming te his assistance and helping to krep the rough mah at bay he might have been klied. Superfa tendent Warner, in making the presentation to Miss Fitzpatick, complimented her upon the physics and moral courage she had exhibited, cordially thanked her on behalf of the police, and expressed the hope that the mals population of the district would emilate her example in alding the police to cope with lawless ruffians, Miss Fitzpatrick having saltably responded, the proceedings terminated,.

[Straits Timti, Aug. 4tb.]
It will be seen from a special telegram in another columa that an Inspector of the Hosg kong Police Force has been sentences, at the Asilais, to a term of alx months' imprison. ment, on a charge of receiving' delbes from the keepers of gambling houset. It wit be remembered that, some time ago, the public of Hongkong wers surprised by the publ!- cation of a sixlement to the effect that several
of the leading officers of the constabulary stood charged before the Captain-Superlatendent of Police on various charges of receiving Illegal | gratifications, and that they had, for the time belog (pending investigation), been suspended. It would be, of course, unfair to suggest that they obtained that comparative filence by other than honest means; bat it is somewhat striking that, whereas the Hongkong policeman is a man who does possess means, the policeman of the Straits is a very poor man, and barely lives upon his pay. The. Hongkong Police must feel that the present conviction is a deplor. able star on their body, and the confidence of the public in the problty and bonesty of its guardians of the peace and enforcers of the law must be severely shakeo.

The drive north at the 200 feet level has been extended a total of 114 feet with lede in the end to feet wide and showing gold. The south drive is now 63 feet, and the reef feel wide. This makes a total of 177 feet on the course of the reel, the whole of which will, with the bat. tery about to be erected, pay well. At the 150 feet level the north drive has been extended to 63 feet and far some distance the reef in this drive has been small, but has widened out to 18. Inches and is still improving to size, showing gold. Sloping is being cartled on above this level opposite the main shaft and north of the star. The rees here is small but of fair quality. Good process is being made with air and mullock shaft mentioned to last reports. The work is somewhat difficult owing to the close proximity of the old surface werkings. However, we hope to soon get below the old workinge and into solli ground, when the work will be not only less difficult but much safer.
