We cannot remember any bing at all com parable with this calamity among the records of this country, where great fires, from that of 1666 downwarde, though often leading to frightfol destruction of prosity, have reldom involved the loss of many lives, it would appear, faded, that the catastrophe of yesterday exceeds in magoltade the rain caused by the outbreak of fire at the Opera Comique in Paris last ten years when nearly 102 people purished.
