News of the growing andacity of armed bands In the ir teilor continues to arrive from all parts of Slam, says the Bangkok Free Press. It is reported from the north that a band, estimated at between 40 and to men, 'armed with rifles, attacked the residence of a high official of Chanzoman Montbon. The usual volleys were fired into the house by the band with the object of intimidating the neighbours and prevening any assistance being rendered the vicilms of ibë attack. In this case the unfortunate official- said to be the Governor and his wife were both wounded. Fer four hours the bard then ransacked the premises seeking for valuables and eventually succeeded in securing 20 cattles and in making their escape. No nows has been received of official pursuit or arrests of any of the gang!
A WEIRD story of the plague comes from Flombay. A party of searchers, says an exchange, making his rounds, came upon a party of nativa intense, Intent upon a game of cards, Something in the soild appearance at one of the players sriracted attention, and an ⚫ officer pliced his hand on the man's shoulder. The figure swayed and fell over prone on the floor-alone dead! I was only another attempt at concealment. On the approach of the search party, the friends of the dead man had hastly propped him up and stuck some cards in his hand. The dedge was as bold as it was gruesome, and is detection was purely accidental. What subject for a Holben or a Dote that gilm group to the plague-stricken house, with a dead man holding tramps f Nothing more ghostly on more cynically horrible than this Bombay tableau la to be found in The Dance of Death. And yet the biding of the dead and dying is an everyday Incident. The awful labours of the Puona searchers have, so far, heen rewarded by the discovery of many hidden cares and scores al

Canteen accounts kia supposed to be audited at the headquarter offices of the regimentıl dis- trict, but, as In many cases no vouchers are won' with the books' the audit is a mere farce. Just to the same way the sergeant-major is forbidden by the regulations to act as canteen accountant, but he frequently does it and draws eighteen- pence a day la consequence.
In justice to the brewer, it should be sald that he would prefer dealing in a fairer and straighter way but the ps are expected and he has to fork them out. Even the humble milkman cannot get Into some barracks without paying five per cent to the Quartermaster.

THE RAUB AUSTRALIAN GOLD MINING CO., LIMITED,
The following is the annual report of the Raub Company. Li'd :-
The Directors have the pleasure to prevent herewith the Valance Sheet and Profit and Loss Account for the year ending 31st March, 1897, the Singapore accounts Incorporated thereła having been closed on 28th February.
Vartoas schemes for obtaining an increased gold output have engaged the careful attention of both the Brisbane and Singapore Bands, and It has been finally decided to add 40 stampers to the present battery, the whole plant to be worked by electricity.
To provide funds for this expenditure os Capital Account, the 10,000 unissued contribut- log shares were offered for sale by tender, and realised an average price of nearly £13. 73,, or a premium of 9s, gð. per share,
In accordance with the Articles of Association, all the Directors-Messrs De Bargh Parc, Robert Philp, George Frederick Scott, and James Forsyth, and the Auditor, Mr. T. A. Bond, retire, but are eligible for re-election, and offer them. relves accordingly.
SHANGAI, May 28th. May 27th was the day fixed for the formal opening of the newly-founded Imperial Celnere Bink, and yesterday the directors were "at home" to their many friends and well-wishers, both foreign and nalive. From an early hour there wis constant stream of native visitors, ,which included H. E, Trotal-Liu, Magistrates Tu and Helne, of the British and French Mixed Courta respectively, and a very large number of officials of lesser rank and prominent native merchants The portico of the Bank was most beautifully decorated in Chinese style, and presenter very pleasing appearance to the (Incorporating Slagapore Balance to 23th. Fab,
eye, Wlibin, the vestibule was also tastefully dorned, Quafat old candelabras in the forms
of deities were made to serve as receptacles for cauntless red candies; and rerolls Innumerable, with all sorts of kiŕdly sentiments loscribed upon them were hung upon the walls. The native callers were segated by the directors in s portion of the bank premises specially decorated and set apart for the occasion. Here a perfectly Iordly fexit was laid with Chinese comestibles and cates. passing the Western barbarlin's understanding and for which he shows a woeful want of app eclation. Mr. A. W. Maltland, the acting foreign manager, with Eis staff, entertained his foreign friends in his own rooms. Here was a huge four-tler cake which was supposed to bring prosperity to all who partok of the same, and stood very much in relation to the Bank as the famous salt of the, Arab chief. This cake was bedecked with many silken figs, representing pretty well the nationalities of all who partook of the confection. But there was something else, too, which deserves a prominent place la the archives of Shanghal, and that was famous
THE Vladimir, a Rasalan Volunteer steamer, with ber 1,017 emigrants and 113 passengera ller at Dornen Whail, says the Free Preis at 27th ult, and Kampong Babr has been lavaded for the past twenty-four hours by an army of baggy, sturdy moujiks, men, women and children. While not exactly plctoresqar, the men being in blouses and queer shaped caps, and the woman and gils in blouse and gown, and for the most part bare headed, they brighten "op the cost heaps and black roads of the wharf. Curiously, the men wear enormens top boots and the women and giris"expose massive ankles and bare feet to the dusty road. As the embowl of ram punch, a specially festive brew, grants apparently only get a couple of suits of clothes for the whole Journey, and Slagapore is about the only place where they get freedom. It is easy to understand their delight at genting ashore, after being cooped up for so long. The men are bearded and heavy bodled, although apparently very good natured; the women have the characteristic face of those accustomed to bard work out of doors, ruddy sad tuned by the weather. The children are sturdy specimes, and some of the girls fairly gand looking. Their happy femper may be judged from no lacident zoted this morning. A couple of gay young Malay Lotharios commenced chaffing the girls, evidently forming their opinion of glilhead from their own people. Without more ado, a couple of the damsels, jeered and laughed at by their own people, tareed to, closed with their tor. mentors, and fairly wrestled them out of breath, with an approved catch-as-calch-can grip, and made them fly, crying for mercy,
which could not fail to have warmed the hearts of the stanlest, kladling the kladliest wishes for the well-being of the first Chinese-Bank con- dacted on Western lines. Pommery and Greno furnished the liquid for the libations used up en the altar of good fortune, and this rite all felt in duty bound to
abreive, and did observe.
There were no formal speeches, but what was more to the purpose, and less wearisome to the callers were sentiments cord?-lly expressed; for Mr. Maitland is geniality is:ll and enjoys the good will of every foreigner and native with whom he bas had business and private relations during his long experience in China.
THE BANK PREMISES.
The Bank premises are located in'the spacious ballding No. 6, the Bund, better known, perhaps, as the Equitable Building-for bere the famous Company has its Eastern headquarters. This, It is no secret to say, is the property of Viceroy Li Hung Chang. At present the whole of the ground floor is used by the Balk, but as soon as the leases of other eccupants expire the vacant rooms will be accepted by the Bank and the whole building will then be known the Imperial Bank of China. The spread of the en-operative store principle in the Army makes headway, and at the begin. ning of the prirent quarter the southern district followed the lead of the Cork, Devonport, and Dover districts, tu so far as concerns the grocery supplies. There is much to be said agalast this principle, as applied, as well as much for it; but it is not the dry canteen so much as the wet canteen that is the centre of jobbery in so many “barracks. "The hand of the brewer lies heavily apon poer Tommy Alklas, and Tommy knows it but he must perforce suffer in silence. Only those who are familiar with the inner life of the

By the cantera regulations the com manding officer of a regiment and his canteen committee can deal with whom they like. LAMMERT and from Saigon to this part, there was a lull during the excller part of the forialght, but a change far the better soon became apparent, and doing the last few days charterers have shown great eagerness to secure tonnage, and at time of willing evenslarge steamers of fuoco plculs and more could be placed at 13 cents ner pleti. Na tonnage is, however, forthcoming so far and, apart from a few settlements at Salgan, business is restricted to one local 'charter at 12 cents pir pical, effected some days back. The market closes firm at 13 cents per pleul.
From Salgon to Singapore, optionat la one Don N. C. There are likewise Indien. tions that business for fiva may be practicable as far forward us July and August landing. From Salgen to Kobe. 24/25 cents per picul has been paid and more steamers are wanted at that figure. Re Bangkok, toonage baving been unobtain able from this port with cargo down, a steamer, shortly ready at Singapore, has been chartered, up only, at 18 cents per pl-ul leside the bar. Another small carrier or two might be placed
on similar terms.
From here to Japan ports the demand has || also coninced and spact from an acısal charter for Kabe at 15 cents per pical several steamers bound North have been readily filling up at even better rales, ranging from 16 to 20 cents per plcul, and more tonnage is wanted. For Vladivostock, a steamer will take the berth and has nearly booked a fall cargo at an average rate of 30/31 cents por picul.
From Pallippine porta to Japan and also from Takao/ Talwanfoo the enquiry has not yet been responded to owing to the extreme difficulty of procuring prompt tonnage.
