RUCTIONS AMONG THE TROOPS

AT WOOSUNG.

SHANGHAI, May 10th. There seems to have been a great deal of childish and absurd fave made over the ziv[z [ disturbance which occurred on Saturday last at the foris at Se-is-lio some eight miles from Woosung. To call it a mutiny is absurd as the diabanded braver did not attempt to sue evan the poor waspoon with which they were armed. Why it should have been thought necessary to march nearly 3.500 well-samed and foreign-del- led troops under all their German officers, with two batteries of snillery, right miles to quell disturbance of 1,00co undrilled and wretchedly armed casile braves is beyond camprehension. To show how badly ward were these latter, Baron von Rektrenstain, who was in com- mand, is reported by a contemporary to have raid that the beaver had bullets for their murr'e-loadera, bat na powder. It seems to us that audeo severity was used in decapitat tag four of the ring-leaders for what was at the outside merely the usual Chinese squabble over payment of wages, and we entirely fail to see how the consequences might have been so disastrous to Shanghal at is implied in nor contemporary's report. There seems to be a tendency to mike too much capital out of every palter While disturbance that takes place among the Chinese. The new foreign-drilled troops are admittedly a great improvement on the old type of Chinese warlar, but why ibey should be laudedto the skies for their beberlour on Saturday we cannot understand. It wasn'cheap advertsas. ment we suppose. The whole affair was of 2 very tilvial ššture.

HUDSON'S SURPRISE PARTY.

After a "record" season in Shanghai tho above popolar entertainers opened before a' crowded audissce at the Theatre Rafal on Salurday night, As usual the programme was 'a most enjoyable one the rounds of applause that greeted the performers testified to their popularity in very emphatic manner. Miss, Llly Linton agzin acted as interlocator and Mestre Hudios, McKimos, Kearns and Harley wors first rate "end man;" a good swinging overture, "Army, and Navy," by the company opened the ball and then Mr. A. Royd gave a pleasing renditon of " Anchored," Mist Amy Thornton In her zeifo-comic medley and dance scored ye! another success and a hearty recall. The ballad "Love's Sweet Song" was beautifully sung by Miss Stanbridge, and then Thomas P. tickled the audience with a diity, regarding "Pilde al Kowloon," and for which he was entered. McKlusog and Kearns contributed one of their neat and clover song and dance acte and they were warmly applauded. Miss Ellloir, as the encoin number for the song "The Fog Bell," gava "Home, Dearle, Home," ard the talented young vocalist bad a most enthusiastic reception. Min Ida Rosslyn (WIS strong a favourite as

in her smart serio-comic sketches and the request for "Romeo" was one that could not be denied. Me, Wallace King had a recall for his song "Plymouth Sausd,” and by request ke

The simple facts are as follow:-At 7 sang the ever-popular "Sally Horner," in great d'clock on Saturday morning Baron van Relt- style. A laughable farce "The Bṛlāci Coremony," | santela received news from General Wang com- closed the first part with rauch merriment. Mr.manding the thren camps at Sestxe-lin ihi 1,000 of the troops he had been ordered to disband bad mutinied. The gallant Baron Immediately ordered out all the fopalgn-drilled troops at Woosung consisting of two battalions of infantry, a squadron of horse and two batteries of from General Wang asking for seulstance, wATO artillery, These, ao further news being roselwed

marched on Setztlin, which is eight miles from Woosung, One company was left to defend the powder magazine at Woosung On the troops arriving at Se-tze-lia a cordon of troops was immediately drawn round the camps and the rioters who had greeted the arrival of the troons

with shants of "Yang Kwelse" (foreign devils) were ordered to give up their army. This they at fit refused to do, but on the guns being trained on them lacy hastened to comply. One of the landers was decapitated instanter. The rinters were compelled to assist in palling the six guns back to Woosung. A slight recurrence of the trouble tenk on Sunday morning, bat was speedily suppressed and three more el the leaders decepliated. There is not likely to be-Scheele & Co....... any more disturbance, as the disbanded soldiers, mostly Hunanase, were barily employed yester day in carrying thele goods and chattels on board one of the men-of war to be carried op the Yangtro to their homes,—China Gazette.

H. Barton opened Part 2 with a pretty plans Interlude and then Altro, the jaggler, came along and did some very wonderful feats of balancing. The rhapsodising and parodislog of Mr. Hudson and Miss Linton was a decidedly good performance, and the laughter and applause that the stilsik avoked was Irresfatible, the recall being inevitable. Miss Habgood, it goes without saying, did fall justice to her grand planofaste paraphrase on Scottish air and her skilled inglementation was highly appreciated. The Gourlays(Amy and William) two of the cleverest pertarmers ever seen here, next convulsed the odlence with their very funny sketches "The Griss Widow""and "The Invalid." William sings and acts like few others can and Amy is one of the best serio-comic singers and danes that has visited these parte. The audf ence parted with them very reluctantly Indeed. An Irish song and dance of the "Two Mara"

style, by McKirson and Kearns, was applauded to the echo and was intensely amusing Miss Elilatt repeated her former successes in the pretty song "The Valley by the Sex" and she had a well won tribute of praise. Hongkong audiences apparently cannot get tos much of Miss Ida Rosalyn and the enthusiastic manner in which this lady's serio-comic sketches were received and the clamorous 'uppléase that followed show that she stands very high in public est. mation. "A little thleg" of T.P.'s own estilled "The midnight fatrader" played by Miss Llo. ton, Messrs, Hudson, McKisson, Kearns, Herley King and Royd brought the performance to a close. A new programme is to be presenter this evening and theatertainment bar ists in common with our big Dictionary, that It has only to be seen to be xppreciated.

THE WHEELBARROW BUNGLE.

SHANGHAI, May trib.

We are informed that at about 3 o'clock an Saturday aftemoon there was held a meeting of local mandarins and gentry at the Tastal's now Foreign Bureau to discuss the question, of the enhanced wheelbarrow tax, which it appears that pine-tenths of the coolles had declared it to be their intention to resist in July. There ware present at the meeting the Shanghai and Mixed Court Magistrates, Mestre, Huang and To, the President of the native Banker' guild Mr. Ch'es, and Yden T10- tal, a wealthy Niogo man having large business faterests in this part. It seems that anticipating trouble in July na decent Chinese will consent to Mr. Joseph Welch, under daie Shangbal, forma gulid for the turbulent weeelbarrow-MED, 8th May, writes 10 The North China la conarquence of which the guild in quanian Daily Niw concerning the first machine is still abeyance.
