EXCHANGE FLUCTUATIONS.

The subjoined table, showing the fluctuations of sterling exchange from 1891 to the present date, may prove of loterest to one readers. The Egures given are the quotations for the first of eich month of the respective years. During the past five years the dollar has fallen in value from 38, old. to 1. 14d, a depreciation of 1/1 or over 35 per cent. That is to say, in Jandary, 1891, one hundred dollars was equal to £14 16. sold., while to-day the same sam is only equal to 9. 10. 11. & difference of £4 16, 11. From the point of view of those lucky folks who receive thelr salaries in sterling th's, of course, ta An excellent state of affalen, Collars it is very much the revers, RF, although but to those whose airles are paid to the prices of all goods of European manufacture have risen proponifonately with the fall to the gold value of the dollar, the salaries have remained at the same figure as five years aga and consequently the sterling equivalent of their salaries big decreased about 35 per cent. Under, these circumstances the jolly-half-boliday civli servants who have recently had the rate of exchange fired for them at 31. per dollar should consider themselves very lucky, for they are far better off than the lackless ~European accountant or shipping clerk who kas to accept

damages.

I cannot learn that registration locally kas la any way Interfered with registration di 20 ds at home or with the Importers. Home registration most certainly base pilothy over local registration, but the latter is regarded not only confiametery bat as affording protection to frade marks. A further advantage that may be claimed for local registration is that in case of dispate it would be considereð prima facie evidence of ownership. In one or two lostintes applications for registration bere have been refused on the ground that the trade mark sought to be protected was a colourable im

tion of one already registered,

My Committee are of opinion that the law is on the whole beneficial to trade and neliber costly nor inconvenient.—I am, dear sir, yours faithfully,
