TEMPERANCE.

Gentlemen, you would probably be surpifred I did not s:ter to temperance, a subject which appears to me of the first impo. ance. I put it to you whether, if all our officeju, saltar”, and firemen we e abstalocrt, "we should not hear a great deal less of so-called "ena.a of judgment," of miscalculation of distances, and of colour- biladecar ? My own opinion is, that the use of strong dilak is an les atent clement in a great many accidents at se, by bringing about collisions and camaliles of every description; and it behaves owners for their own interests. and for the benefit of humanity, to give a decided preference to me who have a clear record for sebilaly; and in carylog out this pilociple concord and harmony would selga on every therefore leave a subject which from his gravO ship. A woạt to the wits is enough, and 1. impertince will secure. I am confident, your concu..eace and suppo. And now. gentlemen, I have done. I thank you cordially.fo. the patient attention which you have given to my imperfect address. I hope to meet you again at the banquet this evening, where the prace lings will be more lively and not galte-no- “diy". äs at a business meeting of this description.

PLAGUE REMEDIES.

Those of us who can remember the-class of vessels in generaluse twenty years ago bavadn our mlada steamers of 1,200 and 1,50 stans, but since that time, with ever bizcasing dimensions, we have reached not only 5,c fo tour, but 8,0 tons, and a few still larger ships of 10,000 tons. The prejudice against these large vessels--not alone confined to the owners of smaller ones-bas now been much modified, and, in my opinler, these boge steamers have came to stay; for wherever and concentration of traffic there will be fauna there is depth of water, barbour accommodation

The Chalman sald-Gentlemen, I plot se with your permission to treat the report as reach At our last annual meeting the prospects for the year appeared to be fairly god, in much we had the nearly three renths of profitable worklog, and there was a general expectation of the continuance in the improvement of the sugar Irade generally, which had then begun. Un fortunately the year proved one of great dis- appointment to the trade throughout the world, and prices, which advanced antll the end of HALF-MILE FLAT RACE (Handicap), open to April, and declled steadily at that I'm at

the end of the year. The first consequence of the declice in Europe was astorally a falling off in the demand for Spain, which, as you are aware, is practically the only market for the Philippine Islands. We were able, however, our sugets excepting the smail consumption in to keep the 1:facay at work, though at a very September, when it was perforce stopped owing small margin of profit, at the middle to the general disorganization of the labour market consequent upon the rebellion to the Philippines, which galoed considerable ground 4 that time. In this connection it wil daubtiers of us can remember how il succeeded in be a satisfaction to the shareholders to know that although fighting has taken place in close proximity to the works at Malabon, the rebels have so far scrupulously obicived the ilghts of property, and no damage has been done to that of the company. The enforced stoppage of the refinery during the last thres moniks and a bait of the year of course told heavily against us, as a certain amount of 1anging expenses for salaries, wages, &c, must be incurred while the works are silent. I may mention that the greater part of the stock of rebord sugar on hand when the works were stopped to September has since been sold, and the refinery started working again We understand that match over a miles at the end of last month. I least that circumstances has been arranged between McKiedy and Mar-will allow of work being continued, but the state tines to take place on Friday next. The latter of affaits to Maulla and the uncertainly which rider is reported to be the Manila cycling exists as to the course of prices to Europe champion.

These views which I have just expressed as to by the action of this Chamber that vessels word day of the voyage. Thanks to the skill of our patients suffering from the plague, and that } Chiliagong sam
