Some years ago, before he went to Japan as the Consolar representative of bis Government, Perret filled the position of Chancellor, or Vice Consul, in the French Consulate in this city.

"The scandal in the Yokohama Club created big uproar in diplomatic and social circles in Japan, but in spite of the publicity that has been given the matter both in Japan and in this city, Consul Pernet deems is to his best interests to make no statement or explanation for publication, At the Occidental Hotel, where he is staying, ke is not to be seen. He has contented himself with antholzlng the statement, through the local French Consulate, that he has nothing to say, He is no his way to Paris to explain the affals of the poker game to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and any prevless atatement would, in his opinion, be a breach of etiquaita and diplomacy,

"Consul Pernet has been explaining his sudden change of fortune to his friends alace his arrival on the steamas Balets, and it waald serm that he is anxious to spread the impression that he has been "jobbed by the friends of the French Minister at Tokio, with whom he har not been on very good terms of late. He admits that he was accused of cheating at cards, but emphatically denies the truth of the accusation. The accidental falling of a card from the table to the floor, during the progress of the poker game, he declares, was velard upon by bli enemies as an excuse for declaring that he was manipulating the paste boards. The French Mintster at Tokio declined to accept his version of the affair when publicity was given to the scandal, and he is now on his way to Paris to square masters with the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

"Peruet.coolerxes to having won goo yen at poker.

The atmount could not have been greater, he declares, the reason that the game was a-two-frand limit,

"Consul Pernet is very much concerned over the outcome of the inves igation that will follow his arrival at the French capital Bat for the scandal in the Yokobama Club he would, by right of seniority in office, have been made i Consol-General within a short time."

FOOTBALL - #EEC. V KOWLOON.

As usual, the Club's men were late in arriving on the ground and when they were there a few changes had to be made in the team, Wood, who was to have kept goal, played forward, awing to one of the men not being present, and R. F. Lammert was selected from the -pectators to be goal-keeper. Play was com

menced at 435 p.m, and in the first minute a goal was scored by Kowloon, owing to Lammert sunning out too far to meet the bail. Then the game was much faster, the leather travelling rapidly from side to side. Many sharp shots were made on Kowloon's goal, which were cleverly dated by their custodian. Half-time was called without any further change befog On play being resumed, the ball centred near the Club's goal for a lengthy peiled, during which a smart and effective shot was made at the goal. The Clab was now unable to keep tis own against the combined efforts of the Komivoniles; who played in excel lent style. They gained their third goal by a well placed shot and a little before time scared their fourth and last goal. Kowloon will cer- tainly be hard to beat in the final if they keep up their present mode of combination.
