ACCLIMATISATION IN THE TROPICS.

In the British Medical Journal Dr. Luiat SAXBON discusses, In a long and interesting article, "The Possibility of the Acclimath- sation of Europeans in Tropical, Regions." The doctor points out that the unhealth!- ness of tropical countries is universally attributed to the direct: Influence of their climate, but that the term- "climate" is generally understood only to mean temperature. Although temperature is admitted to be one of the most important factors in the acclimatisa- tion question, yet the physical and sanitary conditions of a place have also to be taken into account. Experience has shown that it is not the heat that kills, but the disease germs peculiar to the locality, and consequently it is these disease germs which have to be contended with. Of far more ALL these are selected by our London Hous that of adaptation to and sanitation of the importance than the question of hear is bought direct at first hand, tmported in wood natural surroundings of Europeans in a and bottled by ourselves, thus saving all intertropical country. The conclusions drawn by the writer are: First, that European emigrants can live and perpetuate their kind in tropical regions; secondly, that the difficulties in the way of colonisation are not due to climate, but to parasitism; thirdly, that acclimatisation is, to a great extent, a mere question of hygiene. We agree with Dr. Saxton, but feel in duty bound to add our testimony on this subject, and it is that to "fast,” intemperate, irregular, and "high" living may be attributed fully one-half of the deaths of Europeans resident in the Far East who go down with sorrow and grey hairs to an early, or comparatively. early, grave..
