The Chairman vald-Gentlemen, your Direc- tors in submitting to you the accounts and report for the past year are happy to stato that sinady progress continaes notwithstanding the exceed. ingly keen and increasing competition in banking business in the Far East. The world's production of gold in 1896 was not so large s to 1895, and therefore the tendency towards the appreciation of gold (which we hoped had been arrested) still exists and may ultimately cause our local exchanges to drop to lower level. The famine and now the plague to India are seriously affecting our trade with that country, while the rebelilon in the Phi. Hipplaes and the continued unsettled state of Formosa have both helped to limit the volume of transactions with these countries, Itis to be hoped, however, that all these are simply pass- Ing evils and that trade all round will Improve. With these remarks, gentlemen, I now beg to move that the accounts and report be adopted and that a dividend of 2/6 per share be pald.
There being no questions, the adoption of the report and accounts was proposed by Mr. Stal- lerfoht and seconded by Mr. Kwan Hlog Loong and cariled unanimously,

A CHAT WITE BERT WILLISON. "The world in a small place after all" Is a well-worn saying that constantly recurred to me while I was chatting with Mr. Bert Willson, the Chcus proprietor, in his coẩy room at the Hong. kong Hotel the other day. It was about so years ago, out in the Antipoder, that I first met "Pelace Bert,” as he was then popularly called a smooth-faced, good-looking youth, full of an energy and magnetism that augured well for his future. Though only a boy in years, Wilson was manager for Professor Rice, & famous American mind-reader.
