JAPAN AND THE PHILIPPINES.

A London correspondent writes to the Max- chester Guardian :—I have made inquiries about the reported connretion of Japan with the- robaillon in the Philippines, and find that the matter stands in this way: For centuries there has been a considerable population In Larod and the other lalands of Japanese emigrants. When entrance to and exit from Japan was stopped in the seventeeth century the Japanese emigration alio scared; but, before this, one of the most terrible revolutions that bad over taken place in the islands had just been sup. pressed, the Japanese having been the rebels, and their courage and ferocity has ever since been a tradiilen in Manila, The Chinese pope Iation bas frequently then also, but their rebellions never left on the official and popular mind the Ireffaceable Impression that the Japanese rising did. The Japaners in the Phl- Hppines when their own country was closed seem to have remained there, and to bare gradually bren absorbed in the mixed population, though trages of them are willl found to all the older towns. Since the re-opening of Japan to foreign trade forty years ago the Japanese have again been settling wil over the Eastern archipelago, and especially in Manlia, where their colony is a respectable and important 040. This is a vary errocesus statemen!) Whether be cause they found traces of their countrymen of former times, or because of a common dislike of the Spanish rulers of the archipelago, th/a co- looy has always been friendly with the hall casie population, or Mestizor, now in rebellion. A number of leading rebels took relage at one tima or another in Japan, as being fieer from Spanish chervationthan Hongkong orthe Straits Settlements, and safer than any other place flight in the East, and where they were received hospitably by reason of their relations with Japanese in the Philippiner.
