A GERMAN CASE,
In the Honghong Telegraph of the 5th May, 1895, will be found a full report of the charge preferred agilest Captain Albert Harrowitz, of the Norddeutscher Lloyd llacs Hohenzollern, and Dr. Max Rodolf of the same vessel. They were charged (a,) with Isn/leg on Stonecatter's Island without a written ermalt from the Colania! Secretary or the Officer in Command of the Forces, in contravention of action of Ordinance Ne. Jr of 1889: (5) being found in the Immediate vicinity of the fortifications with photographic apparatus with the latention of photographing the forte, in breach-of-anction 5– ol Ordinance No. 1 of 180
Mr. A. B. Johnson, Crown Solicitor, prosecuted, and Mr. H. L. Dens71 appeared on behalf of the prisoners.
Mr. Dennys admitted on behalf of the pri- xoners a technical fault making them guilty under the first charge, but denied any intention of committing sa offence.
Mr. Jobnenn said that, ibe first charge belag admitted, he would confine bimself to the second charge. Section 3 of Ordinance No. 1 of 1895 absolutely prohibited anyone, British or foreign, from laoding with photograph'ng apparatas near the fortifications, and section says that any person found in the vicinity of the fortifications with the fatention of taking photographs should be able to pennitles as set forth. He contended that the only question for the Magistrate to decide was whether the prisoners were in the viclatty of the fortifications,
Evidence was then taken showing the doctor landed with kask and intended to take photos, and when all the witnesses bad been disposed of Mr. Dennys said :-
That is all the evidence. I would draw your Worship's attention totbe PottRegulations, Thure is not a wned in these, which are handed to each captale on arrival, to show that Stonecutter's Island is forbidden ground. The captain knew nothing about the fortifications. They landed and walked niiight up to the sentry. I think that the developed photographs should prove what the taste of the decine was, I submit the fault was purely a nominal one, and would be met, as was a recent case, by a nominal fise of §3. This Is an entirely different case from a recent ode over which so much noise was made.
His Worship: In a case of this sort I must either find not guilty or inflict the full penalty. The detence set up is the Port Regulations. That is an defence. Iftbla bad occurred in any other country there might be a chance of a mis take.. We are told they landed and went straight past the notice board saying "Acceva probibited. The photographs have no bearing on the forts, but that only shops they had taken no photographs of the fortifications. They may not have bad time, I can only go by the evidence before me. The Gist charge is admitted, Botb prisoners must do three months' bard Inboor The second prisoner, the only one convicted-of the second charge, must do one month on that charge. The sentences to run consecutively,
Mr. Dennys:-Dld I understand consecutivõly ?- His Worship :-Concurrently.
Mr. Dennys then gave notice of appeal, and asked that the prisoners be allowed ball This was fixed at $1,200 each,
The appeal was successful, the sentence belag. reduced to a fine of $100, and that sum was eventually remisted.
HINTS FOR EVERYBODY.
Now that wet weather is to be expected, a few hints on the best methods of keeping things dry and preven lag mould and mildew may to of Inte est to our readers. A deal depends opon the wood of which wardrobes, chests of drawers and other receptacles for the storage of clothes are composed, as some woods are more absor bent than others and again some are dituïally damp and apt to exade moisture with each change of temperature. Camphor-wood, although of good appearance and possessing a strong odour which renders it medetately safe from the attacks of insects, is particularly sceptible
damp,
the wood being very absorbent, and consequently wardrobes and other places of foraiture intended for keeping clothes in should
never be made
of it, or the contents wil be
to be ruined by mould or mildew. Habla Well seasoned teak or pine is the best wood for this class of furallure, belag uile affected-by damp and moisture and p.scileally non-absor

[North China Daily News, Feb. 5th.] The Carew Poisoning Case, after lasting gezillk for a month ard being the prominest" tople of conversation in the Far East for over three months, is over at last, and we learned yesterday, to the relief of every one, that the Belilah Minister at Tokio, Sir Ernest M. There was indeed an opinion amounting almost to a conviction that no Yokohama jury would convict Mrs. Carew, and we may be sure that had there been a chance that she was not guilty, Mr. Mowat would have pointed It out to the jury, and the jury would have been caly loo glad to avail themselves of Lit.
