Mr. Francis then addressed the jury. Traversing the evidence in deizil regarding the box, ko said there was no proof that more than one had been made. That portion of defendant's stalement about another box was miterly absurd and it did bin no credit to ask the jury to believe it. There could not be the shadow of a doubt that the box was made for defendant by- Chinese filled with oplam and pai en board the steamer. The letter was extremely clever, naturally expressed, and so warded as to disarm suspicion. The scheme was a diabolical net of revenge to injure Raymond and ruin him in his career, as amuggling opium was a serious offence In the eyes of shipowners on the coast, There wasno doubt whatever that McKinley wrote the letter and sent it aboard, and he used the name of Mr. Farmer, a man in a responsible position and well known in the colony. The prosecu ston had clearly proved its contentions; M., Raymond had suffered discredit and dishonour and actual pacuniary leuk.” As to the Chinese women there was nothing to show that Raymond had misconducted himself, bat McKinley had allowed his ill-will to carry him a little too far. Here and at the police court he did all he could to blacken Raymond's character by making him a deliberate violater of his duly to the ship Owners and a man mixed up in the buying and selling of guais. He asked them to disregard the statement of the man who admitted having acted as a apy and informer on Raymond. Even if Raymond bad muggled oplum and induced a girl to leave defendant, that made defendat wore the less guilty of forgery." The letter was unmistakably written by McKinley and was sent off with the oplum. It not only injured the owners of the atsamer but it tended indirectly to bring Mr. Farmer's character and reputa- ton tata disrepate. Counsel concluded by making for a verdict of guilty on both.conals,
