Miss Coxan and Mrs. Carey as Amy and Kitty played their parts with pleasing grace, their acting in the scene with the prazdo anat being first rate. A little attention to the matter of distinctners would, however, be acceptable, the acoustic properties of the Theatre Royal being not of the best. Miss Lucy Danby gave an interesting representation of Ella Delahay, and she, too, like the other Ingles, has a very attractive stage presence.

The mantleg of the place, which was in the hands of Mr. E. W. Mitchell (stage manager), was bright and pretty, and bespoke skill and taste on the part of that gentleman. The sconcy, too, was all that could be desired, and has the sad interest of being the last work of the late Mr. M. A..Baplista.

patients and sanitary maintenance of the place are concerned. With this object la view be had made up his mind to appoint a Steward whose sole time and attention would be devoted to maintaining the place and Its tomates in a sanitary and cleanly condition. Having dealt at some length with the vanliary maintenance of the hospital His Excellency passed on to a more delicate question, namely, the treatment accorded to the patients. While he wished it to be clearly understood that he had no intention to interfere with the patients being treated in accordance with Chinese methods, yet, as the Goremer of Brliish colony, he thought it his duty to afford the poor at opportunity to avall themselves of such treatment as can be given by European doctora. He had therefore made up his mind to appoint a Chinese trained la Western medical science to reside at the Tong Wah and there, treat any patients who may desire to be treated by him. Moreover, as the scting Visiting Surgeon (Dr. Atkinson, Superintendent of the Government Civil Hospi. tai) has so many other dailes to perform that be cannot give the time and attention required for anch an important duty as that of visiting and inspecting the Tung Wab, HI Excellency decided to appoint an officer whose zole duty it would be to visit the Tung Wab and be at all times ready to give the Directors the benefit of his advice and assistance, and he added that he hoped to secure for that appointment the services of a mediest man who is well known to and highly respected by the Chinese commanlly, Subsequently the Directors were informed that they could select a Chinese vened in Western medical science and with this object in view a mesting was held on Sunday, the 13th instant. There were present at that meeting Mr. Lo T Chong (Chairman), blue other members of the Board of Directors (or as it is usually styled the Commitee), six of the retired Directors and about forty oatriders, friends of the members of the Commiilce. The Kaliong might he asked to subscribe to the new lag. By this means they could find room for the patients as well as for the Doctor skilled in Western science. Then there was the question of the cast of foreign medicines. Who would pay for them? How could such costly drugs be paid for?
