SPORTING NOTES.

TIPS FOR THE REGATTA. Training la now over, and those who have | neglected 21, and find themselves deficient in ¦ staying power for the last few strokes, wra cursing their foolishness in not taking the advice of the old bands and sticking to it to the exclusion of lighter amusements. Growling now, however, is of no avail, and they will baro to take thels licking like men and resolve to train as min should for rext year. It is sur- prising what a host of good scrolatios are rande

st such a time, and equally a matter for wonder how few of them are kept.

Of the four' entries for the Chairman's Challenge Cup, Thistle and Rose show up Test, while Zeek le not to be ignored. Shamrocki however, is apparently nowhere, Rose has gone off a bit lately, from Flayward being off colour, so the race is likely to be a much closer one than was formerly expected.

The Light Gigs race will probably be called off by either one or the other of the crews from the Victor, whose training ought to tell.

The Chinese Cup lies between the Taike and Civil Service crews, the Walfoɔgy; having rɔ backers. The Taikoos are an exceedlugly strong and well accosted lot and their cox is all that can be desired; they should certainly pull the race off, provided rothing untoward happeni to the crew.

The Brokers' Cup (double scalls) is likely to be as exciting cortest, oplaton ring greatly divided as to the merits of the respective crews.

· Lily, Bilten und Mand all have their backers, but Kathleen does not appear to find favour anywhere. Kennett and Lamment are certainly good for a tussle, while the Alves have tralued Carefully, and Gifford and Kew are not by any means to be ignored. The order at the finish will B

Kathleen somewhere in the rear..

The results of the sailing rates are of course Impossible to pre-judge as so much depends on handling and the state of the wind. The leading boats are all having their bottoms seen to and zigging overhauled, while of the many additions to the fleet this reason no opinion can be formed except from drawings of the hosts and from the Judgments formed from such isspections

In the second day's programme the Interna- | tional is exciting much interest, sil the crows being well matched and having komernas sup- porters. The English have had most training but Hayward, as we remarked before, seems A bit off, while both the Scotch and German craw are good and latend to have a hard tussle for the finish. The Scotch bave had much careful corching by Caldwell, and the race should be between them and the English. It is a pity that the Islsa could not manago to scrape x Crow together so as to add another boat..

For the Light Gigs we again mention the two Crews from the Victor being likely to pali off the crat.

Five bonts have artered for the German Cup four of which are warmly supported. Thistle appears to be over-rated, and the race should lie between Shamrock and Kornblane, while Row and Thistle can hardly be excluded. The falib ought to be exceedlogly close.

The Tubs skenld lie between Dowling and Kew, none of the other four competitors showing say remarkable klii at the oak or any great staying power.

The Gilffins have had a fair amount of train. ing, and Kornblume should be there at the finish, provided Dowling can hold ont over the mile. Shamrock shows up well for second place, while Hance is too weak for the Thistle and the Victorta lucks form

We would impress upon the captains the necesilly of their packing their crews off to bed st sn early hour to-night, and seeing that they don't count their chickens before they aan hatched evir a whisky and soda during the small hours Bad bends can't poll any better than broken arms, and the cox of each boat must have R cleat, head and a straight eye for tomorrow's

Julien, to whose memory M, Volpicelli dedicatos his book, we are very much afraid that he would fail to make clear his meaning to any passer-by, and ought therefers to be held to have failed to attain a mastery of his subject. It all Greek to us, and we are unterly unable to pronounce any opinion or offer any criticism on the author's labours and their results. That he has worked hard seems clear; that he follows In the train of good men and trus in the same line is equally clear; Marshman, Stantalas Julien, Edklas, Chalmers, Parker are all well known names, hot to such men he must appeal, and only such men are entitled to sit in judgment upon him. The book is clearly and well printed, and, so far as it is possible to form an opinion,

call required tion or promotion. We have sent the essay to

forge at the bottom of the ship, one man holding on lo another, from one awkward position to another, but still the work went on. Every available piece of fron on board was made use of, even some of the tween deck atanchions, 34 inches in diameter. Bolts from 15 to 19 inches in length were made, and holes for these bad to be drilled in collars and shaft; bands were hammered out and secured, and all this was done when the ship was tambling about at a fearful rats. On the 13th of November the repairs were pronounced fiolshed, and fites were felt and the ship proceeded on her way at seduced seed, from 45 to 5o revolutions per minute. The chief and second engineers, bar. | Ing been on their feet for 145 hours which seems imposible, but the fact all the same- were now in want of a rest; but not for many days, however, for on the roth the same ominous sound was beard and the, fires had to be again drawn. It was then see that the crack had widened out and also lengthened ; two steel-kays, 16 Inches in length and 34 in. by à in,, were driven into the shaft, and more bolts through the collars. On the morning of the rgik steam was again got up, but at a am, another stop had to be made for 1 hour. On the 21st a five-hours' stoppage was required to drive in wedges and tighten up bolts. The crack was now extending perceptibly. Many times when the ship rolled it would open out for an inch and more, and the most vigilance was required to keep the steamer going at even this reduced speed. Thanks

the precautions taken, the Herman Vide! Farlberg arrived salely

Yokohama In

harbour On the 2and November, 41 days from San Francisco, and here the final break occaired. In sachoring, the steamer had to go astero, but ibree revolutions had barely been made before the shaft collapsed and broke in two pieces, and if the engineer had not quickly stopped the engines, more serious damages would have been iha result. On the 25th, the shaft was taken out, and a mosi. carious specimen of a forging It proved to be. The inside of it consisted apparently of scraps of fron, same rusty, enclosed within a shell of about 2 leches in thickness, and how it has no long withstood the heavy strain on it is wonderful; twelve flaws can be plainly seen from the surface. A photograph will be taken of this remarkable abah for the benefit of those concerned. The Hartlepool engine-butides will probably, however, not make any more shafts forials Company. It does not speak very well for Yokohama enterprise TO-MORROW (THURSDAY) AND FRIDAY, that the steamer has now to send down to Hong- kong for a new shall, thereby entalling a loss of time here of two months; but what they lack la

to

coterprise they may possibly make up for in something else. Too much praise cannot be given to the chiefengineer-who is quite a young man, by the way-and the captain, and in fact to everybody, for bringing their vessel in afety to Yokohama Japan Gazells,
