THE DOCKS OF HONGKONG,
THEIR RIST AND PROGRISE.
Hongkong has every reason to be proud of its dockyards, which will bear comparison with many European docks, and undoubtedly surpass any to be found in other Eastern colonies. Starting in 1856 with the modest little Lamont Dack at Aberdeen, Hongkong can now boast of six docks and two patent slips, while the romoure of proposed additions have for some months past been rife in the Colony,'
Armed with a permit from Mr. David Gillex, the General Manager of the Hongkong and Whampoa Dock Company, a representative of the Telegraph proceeded to the chief establishment at Hunghom, and, on stating his business to the Superlatendent Engineer, Mr. W. Wilson, was corteonely tupplied with guide and given carti blanche to wander through the various departments, where the European members of the staff were found very willing to
supply any information required connected with the intricate and massive machinery under their charge.
The Hunghom establishment is situated In Betleh Kowloon and takes its name from the hay at the upper end of which it is'constracted. The bay, with s mimum depth of 6 fathoms at low water (spilng), forma en excellent and serare anchorage for vessels repeling there for Kefiting. There are here three docks and two patent slips capable of accommodating ships of the largest size, as the following table of dimen- slons will show
