The boatwoman who rescued the accused was awarded $2 for her trouble and smartness. The numerous friends of Mr. W. I. THE transplanting operations, which we noticed in our columns some time ago as taking place near the monument to Happy Valley, are turn ing out most exccessfully, the large banyan trees showing za resentment to the rough treatment accorded them, but, on the contrary, are already commencing to sprout. THE Young Chinese Party in Shanghal, Hong- kang, the Straits, and Rangoon, are according to the Rangoon Tímar, which, by the way, is not the very highest authority on "things Chiness," in favour of abandoning the pigtail for the | Entopean style of wearing the hair. One of their reasons, from a Chinese polat of view, is no doubt a very good one. We refer to the disadvantage at which John Chinaman to placed when a policeman or anyone else gets a grip of his quaus. The Chinaman is perfectly helpless. The policemen in Singapore usually take a Chinaman along the road by his pigtail, as the easiest way of holding on to him, and sometimes they tin him by his tail to an lamp-post and sit down by the wayside to have a smoke.
