LABUAN.

October 15th, by Labean during the current year is a matter The steady, if not very rapid, progvora mada for singers congratulation. Anfesicamed carro spondent has furnished us, under date of yth inst., with certalis details which, as they are entirely barna sui by official records, may be relied upon for securacy.

First, as regards 'cust. It would be hardly credited that a steamer harlog a full caren of Japanese coal on board bound from Mejl to Singapore would be toduced to call at that port for backer coal and yet the steamship takky (of Belfast) did this on the 4th fast when she took in soo tons and then proceeded on her Voyage

In the way of shipping it la satisfactory to note the Increased number of occan-going steamera which have called in at the port this year (to above date), viz., 26, at compared with only 5 in 1895 and 2 la 1894. Five of the 7 steamers which called in September last arrived during the eariler past of that month in such quick accession that they quite overcrowded the Coal Company's wharf, resulting to three ships having to lie alongside of each other on no less than four pccasions. On the 14th ultime the

le harbour of Victoria presented a mast busy appearance, the steamers in part being the Libelle, Glentarm, and Claverhill, berthed at the Coal Company's wharf, the Pak Ann (local boɛi) at the Sarawak whirl and the Norwegian steamer Try waiting in the roads for the Claverkill to leave.

During September the greatest amount of tonnage in port on one day was 6,8:0 net, viz. on the gth bitime. The largest steamer was the Strathaird (of Glasgow), from Barrow-in-Furne to Tabs, China, with a cargo of about 5.000 tons of railway material, and the second in size, the

owick Hall (al Liverpool), bound to Shanghai with a cargo of case oil, from New York. She registered 2,377 tans net. Although the Cosl Company's collier Zosite, of 865 tons aut, Fren the bonear el being the largest local bost, she has frequently now to tekela back seat when as ocean steamer-ls in part.

Judging from the lacressed number of ocean. going steamers calling at Labuan lately, and by the large demand at Singapore for Labuan coal, we may safely say that Labuan ought to feel more than hopeful as to the future of its coal trade.--North Borneo Herald.
