Lelth. August 11th, atom, her tall shaft the shaft at sea. The tube was shut up, the propeller being still attached to the ship. By August 13th the ship had drifted forty miles and was in latitude 6 deg. 12 min, North, longitude 108 deg. 37 min. West.
It was decided that an attempt thould be made to carry the news of the ship's unfortunate condition to land, and volunteers to make the dangerous trip were exiled for. Archibald Pell, first officer; William Maltesce, boatswain i James White and Alex McDonald, Bremen, and Jobs Monfrance and James Allen, seamen, stepped forward. Captain Petrie effered to go in the boat himself, but it was deemed best that he stay with the ship.
The lifeboat (24ft. long) was lowered and the six brave seamen started out to reach Acapulco, a distance of 820 miles, though the chances were,
owing to the storms that blow in that region at this time of the year, that they would never
reach land alive.
During the first four days the daring naviga. tors had fine weather and made 113 miles. Then regularly overy afternoon squalls broke over them and mountainous sear threatened every mament to engulf the best. The man, with death facing them, kept up their courage, and at 8 pm. August 18th they raw the light main- tained by the Pacific Mali Steamship Company at the entrance to Acapulco harbour. At 10 am, on the 29th they were safely inside, having salled 960 miles in alxteen days, making one day only twenty-one miler.
There was no English Consul of Acapulco, and the sailors were taken charge of by the American Consul, Edgue Battles, who clothed and fed them. Their bant had been supplied with food for thlity days and water for twenty- five.

I did not expect when we sat down to dinner that I should have been called upon at a very short notice to reply to a toast, but nevertheless I thank yun must deeply for the way in which you have received the toast the Chief Justice kan gives you now that I am about to sever my connection with you after a service of nearly two year. A certain amount has been done within these two the short years and I will just briefly review time we have got what has been done. When I first of all became the 'Commandant, the numbers were not so great as they are now, but that we will piss over: The point is that my predecessor had not get the time, although be had the wish, to promote the improving of the efficiency of the Corps, and It was impossible you could have expected it. But I had the time, otherwise I most certainly should not have taken the position. I landed is the colony at Kow foon in December. 1894. I had known Colonel Jerrard before and four days after I arrived bere he approached me about taking the command of the Corps from him and I was appolated Cont mandant in February, 1895.
