HOMOKONO, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13, 1846,

NOTES AND COMMENTS..

The Natal, which arrived to-day from Shanghal, brought news of the final settlement of the Chefoo fareshare dift- culty. In our issue of the rst instant we sald we were not satisfied with the proposed settlement-to buy out Messrs. FERGUSION & Co. and although we find Mesars FEROUSSON & Co. have been awarded four times as much as the Chinese Government offered to pay them for their land, yet we think the settlement extremely unsatisfactory, for it establishes & pre

cedent that the Chinese will not be slow to make use of, and there is no knowing who will be the next victim. The Chinese are likely to hold now that they can seize the property of anybody and haggle over the price to be paid for it afterwards. That is what has been done in this case, and we can but regret that Messrs FERGUSION & Co.'s representatives were caused to accept Tls. 30,000 or any other sum. as a final settlement of all claims against

the Chinese Government.

hundreds of people, but the interests of the masses must be studied at all hazards. A terribly fatal disease is claiming hundreds of victims and drastic measures only will avall in stamping it out.
