THE Muar correspondent of the Siralis Times wrilog ander date 15th September reparte as follows. A crocodils seized's Chinese boy, about eight years old; at the riverside, un he was looking on at a theatrical performance there. The reptile was making off with dis proy when the cries of the boy aroused the people in the neighbourhood But none of them stirred to help, except ona Malay led who jumped into the stream and wrestled with the crocodile. The lad put his fingers into the reptile's eyes, which made it give up its prey, and thus the boy was rescued, badly mauled; bat it is expected that he will recover. The Malay got a few scratches from the crocodile's claws. The Stain. Commla- sioner intends to bring this brave deed to the notice of the Johore Government, and also to ask *H.! H. the' Sultan 'for some mark of appreciation for the lad In the mean while, the uncle of the Chinese boy gave the rescuer twenty cenia as reward! This, says our Stralis contemporary, courageous act of Malay deserves to be brought to the notice the Royal Humane Society,
In reference to the seisure by the Chinese Government
of steamers chartered by Messrs Besneris & Co., of Shanghai, the China Goustia of 18th fastant says 1—The Beanertz difficulty has been further complicated by what has taken place in Hepgkong, where the steamer Ningehow, (late "Case), which went down to Hongkong for the protection of the British flag, has been arrested at the Instance of the Chinese Government, scling through the Commissioner of Customs, Mr. Hilller, who along with a Chinaman named Lo, a clerk of Mr. Drummond's, made an affidavit before the Court that the charterers were indabt ed to the owners of the steamers. At Shanghai, ́too, there has been fresh trouble through Bennertz & Co. endeavouring to retake possession of aquautliy of coal belonging to them on the stea mer Klangning (late Kungwo)" This the Com- missioner of Customs refused to allow them to do and declined to issue the necessary permit, while a menacing aspect is presented towards the Klangning by a Chinese gunboat which has evidently been specially detailed to watch that steamer. Unless the Chinese Government has a very strong cass it looks to us ne ll the power of the Custome ware being used in a way reprehensible manner to enforce the high- handed action of the local mandarins. But wa confess to know but only one side of what is evidently a very complicated dispute.

The Coal Producers' Association of Upper Silesia has petitioned the Minister of Public Works to reduce the rallway rates for the trans- port of coal from the Upper Silesian mines.
