In staring new industry in a colony like this the question that should be,lated from the coultet li—" Will the intial difquities that are ute to crop up be overcome before those who embark in the enterprise lose not only their money but also all hope of steering their enter- pilve through all nbstacles into the high road to absolute success ?” In respect of the many enter prion s'arted here during the last quarter of a century how many mistakes bave been made wrong lines gone on from the start, too little.ertoo much capital subscribed, the wrong man put la. charge (for the want at times of means to get the right one), unealtable machinery purchased, mficiculations as to markets to be relled on, and so forth ad infinitum, until at length, after "losses great and warrles well-nigh interminable, the right man is found and the right methods discovered. We are far from avering that this has tavariably been the order of the day, but speak only in general terms.

· Kone, August rgth. The accident to the O. & O. steamer Garlic, unfortunately, is much more serians than was opposed and it is believed that it will be necessary for her to proceed to Nigask for temporary repairs and to Hongkong for complete overhaul. The dock at the santhern port is not avaliable and it will therefore he necessary to send the steamer to Hongkong. We have to-day received further puritcals of the accident, and, as will be seer, the latest advies, which can be rested upon, differs slightly from the accoust placed before our readers last night. We were right in supposing that the buge liner bad been bothered by passing wesicis. The channel, we are assured by a gentleman who was on board, was crowded with junks, and the Goette actually esilded with one cast-laden boat, through the helmsman of the junk laffing just before reaching the steamer. Kad he brid on he would have gone clear. The steamer's way was almost stopped, but she struck the junk on the starbrezd quarter and the istler shortly afterwards heeled over and shot out a lot of her coal. The Gaelic Immediately lowered a bost in charge of the Chiet Officer to go to the assistance of the junk's crew. It was while stopoleg to pick up the

boat that it was seen that the liner was dropping down upon the beacon and she was then got under weigh agale, but the tide caught her get steerage way on her, drove her badly on to the beacon. That way about 6 30a.m. on the 28th. She was got aff about 9 o'clock. We were wrong in saying she was beached on the western shore of Hika Island. Afice consulta tion it was decided to run the steamer ashore la

AN ENGLISHMAN'S VIEWS OF FREE COINAGE.

Mr. William Henry Grenfell, Chairman of the General Council of the Birselallic League of Engiand, says the Tacoma Daily News, has heen Interviewed by a corres:ondent of the New York World on the effect of free and unlimited coinage of silver. The Tacoma paper quotes him as saying :--

belleve that free and unlimited coinage of

aliver at a ratio of 16 15 in the United States would greatly increase the chance of an Inter gational agreement for the adoption of bi-metal- lism. I am a strong international bl-metallist myself, and I should like to see an international agreement headed by England, but I do not believe that it is in the sphere of practical politics. Even our English bimetallista are very much divided on the question of the ratio, and it would be impossible to get a proposal adopting any ratio Ibrough the House of Commons.

I attended the last two faternational bimetallic conferences in Paris and Brussels, and I came away from both with the impression that each European country wanted England to show the way, and that if they wait for England to show the way they will wait forever. We have a century of mono-metallham behled dr, and the forces opposed to any radical change are too strong.

What is wanted is an electric spark, and this will not come from England. I hope it will come from the United Stater. When the first step is taken I believe that other countries, such France, Russla and, in time, Germany, will jola, England would open its Indian minis again and we should have a stabla bl-metallic pir of exchange all over the world.
