In another column we publish the very Interesting correspondence that was read at a recent meeting of the Committee of the local Chamber of Commerce. The letters refer to the grossly offensive, quite superfluous, and utterly useless quarantine regulations enforced at Manila against vessels arriving at the capital of the Philippines from Hongkong. The Chamber draws attention to the marked decrease in the number of cases and, look- ing to the fact that the Incubation period of the plague Is only nine days, very reasonably asserts that the proposal to lengthen the quarantine to fifteen and. twenty days is surely unnecessary, and It concludes its representations to the Government of Hongkong with the : assertion that the continued enforcement of such extended quarantine against this port by the Philippines. authorities Is most detrimental to trade. THE steam merry-go-round at present located at West Point is a most excellent specimen of Its kind and should, I better known, become much more popular with both the foreign and native population than it is. The horses are large and vo arranged as to have a very natural motion, while the arrangements for revolving the machine are perfect. Piwatted in the centre, the machine runs on a steel rail, so there is noze of the swaying connected with the earlier specimens of this class of amusement, The centre pole is surrounded by a panorams, and a largo mechanical organ played by su automaton "pigger" gives the requisite masle for ancha plexware ground. The whole being run by steam, greater speed and safety are atisizable, and the management allow quite sufficient time fer each ride. Givan good weather, an hour spent at this place gives just the relaxation so much needed by Europeans and Chinesa alike on these hot evenings. It is well worth a visit.

Dortog the course of the journey the sailors appear la hays objected to vow to the next steamer and used foul language to the quartermaster in charge of the boat. They are also said to have attempted to throw him overboard. The quartermaster, furious at the filthy language of the men and in self-defence, drew his knife and
stabbed both sailors in the fight which ensued. One of the men, Ab Fook, received such injuries that he died soon afterwards, and the recond sailor is severely wounded about the head and runs. The quartermaster pulled the boat to the Krengwat, and immediately wrote out a statement which he handed to the Chief Officer, at the same time giving himself up. Assistance Calder hastened on board to do what be could was obtained from the Mongkut and Captain for the wounded men. It was found that an artery bad beso severed in the arm of Ah Fook, who bled to death, despite every attempt to staunch the bleeding, while the second salios's lajarles were roughly bound up. The wounded man and the dead body were brought up to Bangkok by Captains Unsworth and Calder and was reported at Mess, Windsor's and at the left at the Hangkrak Hospital, when the affair British Consulate, and the Manila quarter- master was taken into costody.
