Sk-We are surprised to see la yesterday's procendi-gs of your Board a reference to a 10- called advertisement in the Chinese newspapers. We beg to state that we had no intention nor nerd to advertise and sent à letter commencing "Sl" and ending "Yours truly" and were not The prizes were then delivered to the successfulware of the form or manner in which it wAL. pupite named below by Mr. Lockhart, who ad printed to Chinese, and as you are doubtless dressed a few appropiate words to eac recipient
MIDSUMMER PRIZE DISTRIBUTION. This function was held in the School Buildings this morning-a) 11 o'clock, the bright, amiling, happy fices of the papils assembled ading mach to the pleasure of the numerous vi l'ors. The large school room was filled to over fling by the friends, parents, or guardians at the paplle The Hon. J. H. Stewart Lockhart, in the abscuce of Dr. Carrington, distributed the prizes, while Dr. Eel scted as director of ceremonies. Hon, J. H. Stewart Lockbart, in opening the proceedings, said Ladies and gentlemen, I have in the first place in explai: to you how it comes that I was here today. As you are aware, Dr. Carrington, the Chief Justice, was coming here to give away the prize, and am sure you will all be disappointed to bear that he is unable to attend owing to Biness. I do not know if was are all aware, az I'm, that the Chief Justice takes great Interesi in education, so that if he had been able to be present bere, to-day he would doublers have given you an address bath Interesting and bighly Instinctive. With regard now to the results of the last year's working of the School, I cannot do better than quote to vou from the remarks of the Inspector of Schools to there recall aret forth in his last report. He painte apt that the school - divided into two divi

the presented division, 107 popie
for eximinition and Rg were felly examined. Chinese Reading, Wifing and the recitation of the Chineve Classics from memory, with Arlthmetic, took the prominent places in these clatres, and the report was exceedingly good. The attendance during the year was not so good during previous years as the pre- valence of plague Interefered much with the pupils in the lower division, though not effecting the higher classes greatly. The mention of plague has brought to my mind that it would be good to tech the girls in this school nursing. As you are all probably aware, in this colony we have a need of nurses, It is true we have at the Civil Hospital several very highly trained nursing sisters who have proved them. selves very nohle and self-sacrificing, as bus jast lately been proved, I refer particularly to Slater Catherine, Miss Melatosh, who bas con. tracted plague daring the performance of the duty the underlook at the Kennedy-town Hospital, and I am sure you will all be gratified to bear that she is now recovering. (Applause) I think it will be a good ibing for the girls to have the example of Sister Cathering to follow and to emulate. I feel sure thls' ides' will be taken tota con- ideration in instructing the "gizic, and I also feel sure that in'andertaking the office of teach- lag the girls of this school nursing great benefit will accrue to this colony. I need hardly remind you that this school was founded in March, 1800, and the teaching was begun In 1893. Slace then Kearly 1000 have pared through the school, which is a result most highly satisfactory, The education given in the School, as you will be able to see from the report, is very satisfactory Indeed, and I think Mrs. Batemen and ber exergeile staff should be congratulated upon the satisfactory results shown by them. (Applause,) I notice in Mrs. Baleman's seport that steps have been taken towards founding #ibrary. and I thinks that this endeavour should dol sperking bo
encouraged, as Colonial Secretary, but I should advise Men. Baterasa to approach the Government on the subject of assistance fo the matter, and I can assure her that the Colonial Secretary will do all In his power to help have her application favour ably considered. (Applause.) I observa that Mr. Bateman has not only the mental training of her charges at heart, but also the physical training. I thinks every support should be given Mrs. Bateman in that, and I observa that to put a tennis ground to neder a certain mil aam le required. I bellave $100 will be suficient put ground in order and enable the girls
the to have their exercise, and perhaps turn out faturs champions. (Laughter) In order to encourage others to assist I myself will subscibe $15 (owards having the ground pat la a proper state (Applause.) I believe it is osonl to con gratulate the successfal prize winners, and to encourage those who have not succeeded. must confess that on these occasions my sympa- thics are with those who have not won. Il, feel sure bas bean the case, they have dons thelt best they deserve every_len, as more tban thefe best can no cae do. They hava every chance of becoming useint men and women in their lives at least. With these few remtis I will call upon the Inspector of Schools to read the report of Mrs. Bateman. (Applause.)

Dr. Eltal then read the report of the Head Mistress for the year, which was as follows :--
Hongkong, 10th July, 1895, Sir, I have the honour to forward you the Slyib Annual Report of the Bellios Pabilc School The increase of English children mentioned la, my report last year has still been continued, the average monthly attendance being quite g per cent in excess of the preceding year. am glad to be able to state that the appear, ance of Plague, which materially affected the number in the Chinese dévision, did not influence the attendance to the English part of the school. There is the usual disparity between the nam- bes admitted during the course of the year and the names remaining on the Register at the clone. This is chiefly owing to the migratory hablis of certain portions of the community, though that the school is fully appreciated la shown by the fact that the greai mijority in the ihres upper classes has regularly nilandóð visse
