THE REPORT FOR 1895.
The Sydney papers draw very dismal pictures of the first half year's working of the free trade policy of New South Wales. It is pointed out that during that time nearly one million pounds worth of farm produce has been imported, while the country in overrun with thousands of mea who cannot find employment. Another grievancO of the protectionists is that produce is brought from the other colonies by sex at a cheaper freight than foods grown in the colony can he transported to Sydney. As an indicailon of a changing feeling among the people, it is remarked that the National Protection Associa. ilon is booming and now occupies the quarters vacated by the Freetrade and Liberal Associa tion upon its dissolution after accomplishing lis object

Reports from Newcastle to the 1st inst, showed that as yet there were so indications of an early settlement of the strike. The miners' general secretary, Mr. Jas, Curley, now states that he was written to Mr. Bloney to the effect that the miners are desirous to return to work on the conference proposals. During conversation with one of the most infitential mine-owners, the latter said that they were all determined to enforce the redactions set wat in the notices recently posted at the pli-tops, and that no action on the part of the miners or anyone else could alter their resolution. Asked if he thought there was asy truth in the rumour that the Shipping Federation Intended to take action towards cancelling chartem of vessels, the same gentleman said: "Let them take what action they like, and let the vessels go away; we will not budge, and the miners will be the greatest sufferers."
