RE THE SECRETARY OF STATE'S DESPATCEL In the London & China Express of the 5th Jume the following appears as a paragraph :-" Mr. Henniker Heaton, M.P., baring called the attention of the Colonial Secretary to the strong feeling exhibited at Hongkong in favour of the appointment of additionai unofficial members of the Legislative Council, and to an alleged under- taking by Lord Ripon on the subject, Mr. Chamberlain replied, stating that he had just addressed a despatch to the Governor of Hongkong, conveying his decision, which will be published by his Excellency,
The many friends in this colony and various parts of the East of Mr. and Mrs. Ellis, of Pedder's Hill, wil join with us in expressing great, regret at having to report the death of their little boy, Victor, who succumbed to an attack of dysentery at 6 o'clock this morning. The child was ill only a few hours, and so violent was the attack that it soon gained complete mastery over him, axhausting him and rendering all efforts to revive him unavalling. The funeral cortége left Mr. Ellis' residence at-4 p.m., and. was followed to the Jewish Cemetery by the brothers and sisters of the deceased and a large number of sorrowing relatives and sympathizing friends,
