A prisoner in gaol is helpless to protect depending for everything on himself. He is a slave for the time being immediately about him and over him. He is secluded from the public, and from the ordinary means of assistance and redress. Hence it is that the law lays down in the most minute fashion how he is to be treated in prison, how fed, clothed, worked, and punished. The quantity and quality of his food is strictly regulated. His hours of labour and rest, the kind of work he may be put to, the quantity be may be required to do, are all a matter of rule.
