It has been polated out frequently in these despatches since the close of the Chirent- Japanese war that far greater events la polliical history are pending in the Far East than in Africa, Turkey, or Europe. Signe mullply that these events will soon be made known, with what effect upon the relationship of the great powers of Europe it is impossible to foresee.

It has been widely anticipated that the division of the Chinese Empire would be ore of the inevitable, though perhaps distant, effects of the war with Japan. The most important and circumstantlil of these reports is a communication made public this afternoon by the Landen Globe, one of the most careful and Conservative London journals, which bas many times proved the value of its sources of information in the Far East. This letter is written by an Englishman who doring the last twenty years has been in closer confidential rela- tions with the Cbluese Government than any Ambassador accredited to Peking.

The letter reads as follows:--

ZIGNORINA BELINFANTE WEDDED, By the American mail which arrived here on Sunday news was received of the marriage at San Francisco, on the 9th May, of Signorina Bellafante, the popular contralto singer who has touring the Far East last year, to Mr. R. Edmins- ter, who came here some three months ago as advance agent of the Ovide Musin Company. After making the preliminary arrangements for this Company Mr. Edminster completed his engagement and left for home. The story from this point is told in the following extract from the Frisco Chronicle of the foth tlf. :-

The sequel to a romantic story of love at first sight took place yesterday, when Estella Bella fante, the blind contralto, was married to R. Edminster, the well-known agent, who has arranged for her concerts since her arrival here from the Orient.

Of course the expression, Love at first night," must be used advisedly in the young lady's case, because she is slowly losing even the sense of distinguishing day from night, and could not tell, except from the remstks of other people, for 20 what a dashing, good-looking young fellow Ed. That question was finally decided by the friendly servicer rendered by the northern power lo obtaining the retrocession of the Line- tang peninsula and saising money to meet the first festalment of the Japanese indemnity,

"Among the advisers of the Government tha query was, 'What artion has come forward to help as in oor extremity ?
