FIELD BATTERY, H.K.V.G. Y, VANCOUVER,

THE BOER TO BE SUPPRESSED. *

NEW YORK, Apell zotk. The World's London cable says:-Unjust, unchristian-like, and in violation of treaties as it is, thats it a vast wave of public sentiment in Regland that the Boer must be crushed at any Coal, The Britons seemingly would have welcomed the execution of the sentence of the condemned Ujulanders as an excuse for seising the Transvaal,

The Times in an ecl'orial on the subject says:—It is impossible to igave the gravhy of the conclusion to which the published telegrams polat. They establish beyond the possibility of doubt that Call Rhodes, the Premier of Cape Colony; Alfred Belt, a Di ectar to the British Chartered Company, and Rutherford Harris, Secretary of the B-fifth Chartered Company, were privy to the movement against Johannes- barg, and that the leaders of the movement counted upon their helɔ and countenance 10 lasure success. The telegrams must be takes to prove that Mr. Rhodes approved the revolu- tion which was desired in J hannesburg, but nothing in the correspondence goes to show that the clul crossing of the frontier by Dr. Jame 100, under the circomitances under which it eventually occurred, was known to Mr. Rhaics or as tried out with his approval. The reasons which actuated ·D:. Jameson in crossing the frontier when be did remain clouded in mystery, His conduct swalia the explanations he may have to give at his trial,

|

The Times, to an editorial article, then pro ceeds to justify Mr. Rhodes for consenting to an armed force on the frontier, on the ground that it was foregone conclusion that in several years an attempt to obey a rediers of a Uitlander grievance by force might be necessary. "This was shown," said the Timur, "by the report thai Sir Henry Loch had knowledge of such an intention. Nobody will seriously blame Mr. Rardes for regarding this movement without diafavour, but his position as Premier should have restrained him from mixing actively in it. Saccess might possibly have excused, bui 11. could dat høre Junilfied the part he played.

'M«, Rhodes, Mr. Belt, and Mr. Harris may' be called to account as Individuals, but this does not necessarily Ivolve a condemnation of the company. In the question as to what should be done with Mr. Rhod and the Chartered Company it must not he forgotten that there is a strong centre of anti-British influence at Pretoria ready to take any advantage of any weakness on our part." GERMANY TO ACT REGARDLESS OF ENGLAND'S WISHES.

|

ExALIN, May 3rd. The latest advices direct from Pretoria remore all official apprehension that there will be war, between the Transvaal Republic and England. The feeling bore is that President Kruger's diplomacy has rendered England powerless to trespass upon the independence of the Boert without onimaging the opinion of the world and Justifying the powers in interve of the Transvaal

Dr. Loyds, Secretary of State of Repubile, who recently, spent some months la Germany, will return to Berita in July in some new official capacity, and Germany will soon send an important diplomilst to Pretoria, and this will certainly be dons, too, without asking the opiofon of England. “

|

It is noticeable that the papers that were so bitter in their comments upon the Transvaal Government when the annanacement was made of the severe sentences that had been passed upon the Pretoria prisoners are now rather more than mild in speaking of the matter, which is very good proof that the publication of the dispatches has had the effect that Prevident Kruger undoubtedly intended it to have. Messre Rhodes, Belt, and Harris will very likely be called upon to explain their connection with the conspiracy, and a further explanation will be don from Mr. Rhodes of the assurance he gave to Mr. Chamberlain during his recent visit to England.

PRETORIA (South Africa), April 201b, A great sensation has been caused bere by the publication of a series of t legrams that were entered as evidence at the trishof the members of the reform committee.

These telegrams, it is claimed here, show beyond any doubt whatever that the raid of Dr. Jamison was not the result of a desire to protect the women and children of Johannesburg, In the event of a rising thers, as has been argued by certain. English newspapers, but was the outcome of a carefully prearranged plan on the part of certain individuals of the South Africa Complay to seize a portion of the Transvaal, portion well known to be the rich gold reef of Witwaters Rand on which Johannesburg is located. Some of the telegrams were in cipher and on their face were apparently hirmlers business messages that had passed between different men connected with Johannesburg and the South Africa Company,

Al the time Dr. Jameson and his companions were captured by the Boars the latter found in the Doctor's hag a key for code mensages. This was taken possession of by the authorfiles, who inter obtained the message containing words corresponding with thors in the key. In cer- in cases the words in the original messages could not be deciphered by the use of the key and in these cases the code words were read as in the despatches,

The dates of the despatches ranged from De- cember 7th to December 29th. Following are extracts from the messages :——
